Very tall nobile-type Den

My Den is in it's growing cycle and has gotten too tall to keep in a pot. I have wooden stakes and stocking ties all over the place, but the tops are now drooping over and I don't know what to do. I have a brand new keiki, just since this last May, which it already about 14" tall and at the upper portion of a stalk and it (the keiki) is just hanging down, pulling the entire stalk over. The keiki has four good sized roots and one thing I am wondering is, should I pot it up or is it too young? I've read here that we should wait until they are about two years old.

Next, what can I do with this big Den......can they be mounted or should they be tied up or what? I hesitate to put it outside because I am afraid of molds and bugs, but I want to do what is best for it before I kill it while hesitating too long.

The only trees in my yard are Palms, so what would I want to use as a mount?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You have many options. Yes you could mount it if you like, or you can tie it up and leave it in the pot. For a couple of my taller growing plants that are potted, I use a piece of galvanized wire, bend it into a u shape, putting the two ends deep in the pot to stabilize, and then clip the canes to it. You could even use two at opposite sides of the pot to kind of make a cage for the canes to grow through and support themselves on. This helps to keep them up, and keep the pot from tipping over... If you don't like the look of the wire, wrap it with green floral tape.

As for what to mount it on, if you decide to mount, any good piece of untreated hardwood will work. the best time to mount is when you have actively growing roots.

For removing the keiki, that is your choice. If you can stabilize the cane, you won't need to, but if it is 14 inches tall, and has good roots, it should be ok to be removed as well. I personally do not remove keikis, unless I want a piece to give away, or want to start a back up plant.

One solution is the pinch off the top leaf once they reach 13 or 14 inches to stop them growing bigger. I haven't tried it but I believe it works. If they get higher than that then they can become unwieldly.

My neighbor has the most gorgeous den nobile I ever saw. It's huge. She slipped the pot into a large ceramic pot which she put on a pedestal and keeps near her sliding glass door. The canes are so long they arch over and cascade all around the plant. Breathtaking.
