My newest mount with noid Phal rescues

I've been working up to this project and picked up some out of bloom noids. Some were healthy enough to go forward with , some needed potting for some TLC. Two pots had two plants = good deal.

I was going to attach them all upside down, but hubby didn't like that concept despite my explanation and a friend's agreement, so I compromised. Two up, two down.

I've found mealies now on all five. Pooh. (I should let the store know) I'm spraying and they are in quaranteen.

We tend to assign nicknames to things. This may become the mealie mount.

I love them I did one too this past week I will have to post pictures of mine to. Mine doesn't look as nice as yours though. You got nice drift wood. Mine is on wire but i did use moss . I like the upside down position isn't that the way they grow in natural? I like it it looks real nice What are you using for the devil bugs I have had a terrible time with them in the past month LOL They are like little devils to me . I bought some 3-in-1 Bayer.

I'm spraying Bayre's Insecticide. Yes they grow up side down in nature so to speak.

Hi lmartiny,

it looks good! the driftwood shape is very nice and mounting means that you can water frequently without worrying about rot. hope they will bloom this year

looks great, Lynne. I'm sure you will get the mealies out of there. I'm gonna have to search for some driftwood this summer. Maybe I'll head to the Indiana dunes, should be able to find some there.

Wow, Lynne, nice job. Is that coco fibre wrapping the roots? How often do you think you'll need to water them? For some reason, I'm a bit hesitant to consider putting phals on a mount, but you chose a good approach, buying some out of bloom NOID rescues.

I'm really enjoying my mounted 'chids. I think I get more "intimate" with them because I have to water them every day. So I notice every new development, and some that aren't even anything!

The mounts definately need more watering and I have trouble keeping up with them actually. And now I've made another one! They are also wieldy when needing to move them inside for cold snaps. I've left the coco fiber on the other ones. The roots will grow from it. I make little pouches with it and put some soaked bark in before I tie it down. My older mount is in spike with good root growth. I'll try to get a couple of picts later.

I just am in the habit of watering all my mounted 'chids before I go to bed, ten minutes max. And before anyone says not to water at night, I got the suggestion from Jim Rose at CalWest Orchids who said they keep the humidity up longer when you water at night. No problems with any of them so far!

Here is my older mount. It looks kind of bare. It looks better in person. But yes, you see some dehydratiion. But my point is, see how the roots have grown along the wood. And, they all spiked! (I've left it out in low 40's upper 30's just recently, I'm watching for possile damage)

Wow!!! Spikes Love how the roots looks running along the mount! Well Done!!

Not to divert but wanted to chime in here on what koshki mentioned.

I water the rest of my orchids at night, have never had any issues either, granted growing environment plays a big role, and I am by no means encouraging this practice as I realize the potential problems it could cause.

For me... my plants are my relaxation time albeit Orchids or Non-Orchids. I enjoy taking my time with each one, mostly observing them each time I water, this could take up to 5 - 10 min per plant. I do not obsess over them, just observe and take my time and find it to be very peacful / relaxing.

Anyway... Back to the Spike
Love it!!!

I love it. I come home every night and take a good look at all of my orchids. My boyfriend thinks I'm crazy, he tells me they will never grow if I keep stairing at them! I enoy it also, it really does relax me, I don't water just look at them. I do see some changes from morning to night. Especially when they are in bloom.
