Mounting a Masdevallia?

I just want to get some advice on my Masdevallia ayabacana (used to be Regalia). I recently acquired it and really do not want to kill it (quickly or slowly)!

All the literature say that Masdevallias are epiphytic/lithophytic. However, nowhere on the internet or in books is there ever a reference to a Masdevallia that is mounted. Potting methods are exclusively discussed.

Is it possible to mount a Masdevallia if the humidity and moisture is kept at the right levels?

Here's a pic of my new beauty.

Yes you can mount a masdie using sphag to attach to the mount. The hardest part is keeping the mount moist enough but if you are willing to water, it can be done. I have five mounted and they get water twice a day.

Love your picture!

The look of a well grown mounted Masd cant be beat, but if you think you may have trouble keeping the mount moist enough it may be a good way to kill the plant.

There's an article in the November 2009 issue of Orchids (AOS magazine) featuring a woman in Colorado who terms herself a windowsill grower. They show one of her cork slab-mounted masdies and that thing is lush and full. You can do it!

Would you be able to mount it, and then run a wick up into the sphag- sort of like a self-water pot?

I don't know much about mounts, but that is one beautiful bloom!

I have about 25 masdevallias and the most of them are growing in live spagnum moss. The rest of them are growing in a mix of fine pine bark, charcoal and perlite.I have seen some of them growing on virgin cork mount.I ll try to mount some of them on pieces of tree fern. You can try but u must be sure that you ll give them a lot of water during the summertime .
