Ummm... can I mount a Nobile type dendrobium?

Just wondering...

I've read that you shouldn't overpot them but I saw a photo of some really beautiful plants that seemed to be hanging from what looked like a square wire grid that was also hanging.

I don't want to hang mine from wire but help me with the pros & cons to mounting some nobile type dends vs. potting them up in a small pot?

If you mount them doesn't that defeat the whole advice on keeping them in cramped quarters?

I've got 3 small groups of nobiles that I need to do something with (should that be nobiles with a "n" or an "N" ?) and I've got both small pots &/or something to mount them to... uh, plus that I already mounted one that was given to me before I did much research on what I should actually have done with the little buggar.

They are very hardy. I have them mounted in trees, and they grow very well.

However, I'm not sure if having them cramped may particularly improve bloom count. I have seen some pretty spectacular ones mounted.

I agree with Tansy - mine are mounted.

I don't that is a problem. If you like yours on a tree why not?

Ok then, I'll keep you posted... it's that time of year here in Indiana that I have to consider what to bring in... what needs a new pot etc. I've been collecting some interesting items to use in conjunction with my chids...

So is it ok to re-pot (or mount) at this time of year for a nobile type dend? Or should I wait until spring & re-pot or mount just after they finish blooming?

Usually they need active root growth to grow onto the mount. If the roots have green tips, I would tie them to the mount with a bit of sphag (maybe) and see how they go.
