Talking Four New Mounts

Hi everyone.

Have been busy putting up mounts before Fall and winter hits.

Here they are, all mounted on Teak wood pieces purchased from RF Orchids:

~This is my Cattleya schilleriana var. sanderiana. I bought this one back in July 2008, and actually un-mounted it as I thought it would do better potted. It's not done much of anything, and I hope it likes its new home:

~This is my Cattleya alcandiae var. nigrescens. I recently purchased this in July 2009, and it already put out a new growth. It's teeny tiny and I'm hoping it likes living on its Teak wood mount. I hope it gives me dark blooms:

~This one is my Laelia anceps var. guerrero (Chilapensis). I just bought this one from Cal Orchids and it's smaller than I thought a Laelia anceps would be. I love the guerreros. The mount is actually quite large, something you really can't get from the pictures:

~Finally, here is my Schomburgkia albopurpurea. I bought this one from a private seller who posted a classified ad on OrchidMall. I fell in love with the white blooms, and of course, its tiny size. The pseudobulbs are very small, and twist and turn every which way, which, upon reflection, seemed perfect for mounting. The entire plant actually fits in the palm of my hand, to give you an idea of its size. Again, this is on a Teak wood piece purchased from RF Orchids:

All of the mounts look very attractive, but the plants look dehydrated to me. Did they have good roots when you purchased them?

G'Day Maria1971

Those teak mounts look exquisite, I certainly do not know a lot, other than what I have learned on this forum but, should the laelias bulbs be that wrinkled? Don't take me wrongly as I really do need to learn these things.

Cheers
Bernie

Actually, no, they did not. The laelia and schomburgkia are recent divisions and the schilleriana didn't have good roots either. They are getting pampered and hopefully will plump up soon. thanks for the comments.

Nice! I love the look of mounts. I can't wait to have a place someday to have more. I just have some small ones. Keep us posted on how they do!

Thank you Patti. I'm hoping to place some hooks on my front walkway and place about 8 additional mounts there. I also need to place more hooks outside. They are nice to have, but I have to keep running in and out with them during the winter (it can get down to the 30's for some weeks here.) Thanks for the comments and I'll surely keep you all updated.

I really like the mounted look but do find it to be more labor intensive to keep properly watered. But I keep doing it. Getting ready to do a tampesis next. I think yours look great. Nice pieces of wood. Your laeclia anceps wood mount reminded me of one of my recent ones shape wise. I've been scrounging wood from the waterways and the woods.

lmartiny,

That looks great!! I have to wait until September to get new mounts, as RF pretty much ran out until their next shipment. The teak is great and the plants seem to like it. The problem I have is the spiders and assorted bugs that feast on my orchid roots periodically. I am not a big fan of pesticides, but at this point, I don't know what else to conquer them with.

The cinnamon/soap spray works pretty well if you want to avoid pesticides.

It is in the forum somewhere. It is Brookn's recipe. 2 cups water, 1/2 tsp cinnamon extract, 10 drops of liquid dish soap.
