I love neglecting orchids

I have been so busy with end of school year activities that I have barely had time to water my orchids. So today I took a little more time and found many surprises that I wanted to share.

Picture 1 and 2 - My Pychopsis, which has been off and on in bloom since October when I bought it from Costco, is throwing 1 new spike and 1 new growth for sure. It also has what I believe to be a second new spike. Keep in mind this has 2 spikes already that are alternating flowers.

Picture 3 - My Dendrobium is starting a new cane. The last one did not flower so I hope this one will. Or if I am lucky both will flower in the fall.

Picture 4 and 5 - These are of a $5 Catt that I got from Lowe's last summer. This sheath will be it's first bloom in my care.

Picture 6 - This Oncidium Noid nearly died a year ago due to sunburn and dehydration. It has started the 5th and 6th growth of this season. Hopefully it will flower from these.

Picture 7 - This is another $5 noid Catt form Lowe's last summer. This was in a 3.5 inch pot with about 5 growths last year. It currently has two sheaths and another growth maturing. The two sheaths look like something is happening inside.

Thanks for looking. All are in S/H, fed MSU fertilizer, and on humidity trays.

Good thing you did cause it looks like they liked being neglected. Wish I could be as lucky. How come I never see $5 Catts.?

I think I remember the Onc. NoID. Isn't that the one you posted about a while back? If it is, it has come a long way. Awesome!!!

Great recoveries! I too have rescued several orchids from Lowes. My favorite deal was the V. Robert's Delight Garnet Beauty. The lady I talked to had NO clue about orchids whatsoever. I mentioned that they looked "sickly" and low and behold if she didn't mark them down to 3 bucks a piece. I grabbed all I could. All of them are doing fantastic. The little Catt that I rescued perked right up from its severely dehydrated state when I put it in some moss. It's spitting out 2 new pieces of growth at the moment. As soon as they are big enough, I'll get it out of the moss. Lowes offers some great plants, but I really wish they would learn to take better care of them.

Good growing, Jay!

I have some neglected 'chids -- either doing nothing or doing better than before. You can never tell what they'll do!

Thanks everyone. I usually don't get to see this many at once. I have been so busy that I have just been topping off the water instead of full flushing. It was good to see what they have done the last couple of weeks.

Janet - It is a noid. I got it from Costco in October for $13. It had two spikes which have been taking turns being in bloom since then. Here is the most recent bloom, which is not all the way open yet. I hope they synchronize a little as this third spike is growing.

Jay, I've come in late on this thread so you probably know that you have a psychopsis. There are quite a few different ones now and it seems they are coming out with a new one every month. Just in case you don't know, never cut the spike(s) until you are very sure they are dead and then only cut back to live material as they will send out a side shoot. These things can blossom for years and years on the same spike. Wow, your third spike is coming? That will be a spectacular plant.
Hope this isn't to redundant.
Al

Thanks for the advise. I did know that they were sequential, it has been off and on in bloom for 8 months now. And know with a 3rd and 4th spike
starting, it should be great.

I think it is good to mention again for any newbies that might see the thread and want to get one.

very pretty; and yes, it does bear repeating for the psych's; i think they should come with a tag that says "NEVER CUT THE SPIKE!"

Jay, maybe because they are all in S/H you did not really neglect them. I guess that even with just a small amount of water left in the pot it would still wick up and keep the plant alive. But since I am not an S/H man I may be utterly wrong. Please comment.

Bill

Bill you are right there. I still topped off the water, but I did not flush them like I normally would. I was doing the minimum, which could have caused problems in the long run. Neglecting. . . maybe closer to skimping on the babying time with them.
