Pots

Ok, Im getting ready to order from hydro orchids to repot 5 of my orchids from clay pots & bark/moss mix to Leca clay. Now since orchids need a drop in temp at night. Would I get better results with the black or the white pots they have? Black would be warmer during the day (I have a southern exposure) so there would be a larger drop in temp once night comes around or would black be bad and get to warm during the day or doesnt it matter and Im thinking to deep? I like the ease of care the system offers the one orchid I bought from them at the Parkside nurseries orchid fest.

Heres my list of orchids-

1- Brassia ‘Rex’
2- Dendrobium hybrids (one is a keiki that I mounted on cork)
2- Phalenopsis (home depot rescues)
1- Oncidium kramerianum x Versteegianum (this came in the hydro system)
1- Cattleya aurantianica
1- Blc. Chia Lin 'New City' AM/AOS

The pot would need to get direct strong sun to really 'cook' and that much sun would be bad for the plant, so that situation wouldnt happen

I reckon either would be fine, althought white pots would look grubby quicker, so i'd go black (Y)

Remember to repot them to hydro when there in active growth, catts and relatives have weird cycles, only repot when the new growth is laying out new roots. same for oncs and dens too, den especially careful dependin on what type.

I prefer the clear or frosted pots myself.

I found clear to be better because you can see the roots and if they are in trouble or not. If you are switching medium, I would suggest clear. That way you can see the roots and how they react.

I am afraid you are thinking too deeply into the retention and dissipation of heat. I think you scientific assumption is right but the surface area of the pots are quite small to have any discernible effect on the temperature gradient (in 24 hours) because of the colour.

But no harm in trying as long as you don't have to shell out more $$ for the pots.

Good luck.

If you like the black then it is OK. But white pots may well heighten the colours of the flowers on your list of orchids. I searched for pictures of flowers on your list (on the 'net) and most of them appear to be well suited for white pots. {C. aurantianica= C.aurantiaca?]

Maybe some others will have more input on 'colour perception or colour psychology'. But if you really like black ( the colour of the universe), go for it.

Where'd you hear that? It's a bit of an over generalization. While it is true that the nature of most of our growing spaces results in said drop in temperature, we must not confuse that with the assumption that all orchids need a drop in night time temperature

This name is expressed incorrectly. Rex is the grex, not a cultivar name. The correct expression is: Brassia Rex.

I don't have any of my reference materials in front of me at themoment but I think verstegianum is a species therefore it should not be capitalized.

The genus has been changed for this species. It is now properly called Guarianthe. The species name is also misspelled. The complete correct name is: Guarianthe aurantiaca.

I believe there is a huge difference between 'black background' and 'black pot'.

It really does not matter. If you like the colour go for it.

Good luck.

No appology necessary. We are all learning proper punctuation, capitalization
and nomenclature changes. Kevin started a very educational thread on
orchid nomenclature for all.

Not sure which system you are ordering but if it is the one with the float gauge, check out Interior Water Gardens website. She has a sale going on. She sells the Luwasa system which I have been using since September and so far so good. She is also located in Surf City on Long Beach Island. I see you are in PA so if you go over that way you can save the shipping costs. Tony M.
