Vanda in S/H ???

Hi. Has anyone tried a vanda in S/H? I just bought a little one at HD (it has healthy roots so I grabbed it) and since everything else I have is in S/H I wondered if this would make it too. I know Ray at First Rays has not tried it. Just wonder if anyone else has. Seems like I read somewhere that someone was having good luck with it, but I have no clue where that was! Thanks, Peggy

I'm thinking of trying one of the vandas I just received in s/h. If I do, I'll let you know and keep you posted.

It can be done, and can work

I would not go near it though as Its rather chilly here so keeping vanda roots moist for longer periods without real drainage would probably be a real rot

I have found using hydroton balls as media, but not sitting it in water to be good with paphs though, so as long as abit more time was given for vanda roots to dry i guess i could pull it off, but i like mine in vases

It is down to personal conditions really, it could work

Tom do you submerge the pots with hydroton, the same as bark, then just wait for them to almost dry out etc, etc??

Yes, exactly that.

I had a paph in hydroton and sitting in a saucer for a about 3 weeks. In that time it lost half its roots due to rot.

Since removing the saucer it has put on a growth boom and seems much happier.

I am growing Vanda teres in S-H under lights. It is growing very well. It is in a HydroGrow rectangular plastic container (4.5") with Gemma Waterstones. The Gemma stones absorb more water than the typical expanded clay (e.g., Hydroton). The plant gets misted once a day to keep the aerial roots hydrated.

I purchased a vanda at an orchid show back in March. I was in Ormond Bch, Fl. It had buds on it when I got it along with 2 plants in one basket. Not knowing anything about vanda's I brought it home, studied it. Read up on it on the internet. I do very little to it. We have a screened gazebo in the yard of which it hangs. It is ready to give me more babies. It is so beautiful. I have 8 orchids now, all of which hang in our gazebo.
