Tokyo Blue Vanda

I bought it 6 mos ago, now it bloomed w/ 11 huge flowers. I simply amazed being a newbie, I felt I must share to others.

My Robert's delight has a small spike too, I'll share that too one also in a few weeks.

Hi,
I removed the tag thinking I could but I can't remember my Rober'ts Delight name now, I bought too many orchids. I'll post the pix once it blooms, maybe you can help me identify it (its reddish/fuschia).

BTW, I'm thinking of repotting my blue vanda in a 6" orchid vase after it blooms w/ coarse medium to keep the moisture for a longer period of time vs hanging in a basket. Would this be a good idea? Is it normal for a vanda roots to stop growing while in bloom since all energy is directed to the blooms?

The genus goes first in the name, so it should be like this: Vanda Tokyo Blue.

Hello Jess and to the forum! Very pretty Vanda you have there - I love the blue ones too.

I don't think the orchid vase sounds like a good idea - but I really don't know exactly what you are describing. I believe they like their roots to dry out - and are very prone to rot if they sit in water or stagnant air. I have mine in baskets with extra coco-chips to keep up the humidity - but I don't think they like pots with media much. Has anybody tried this?

I nearly killed my vanda due to my restless hands. My vanda was happily living in a small basket until I decided she needed a bigger pot. So I cut the plastic little by little trying not to hurt the roots so much and even forced the tightly knotted roots to spread apart and potted it with LECA. A few days later, roots shriveled and turned gray, though some of the blooms are still in tact, I realized this was the biggest mistake I ever done to my vanda. I'm now hoping for it to recover. Any suggestions for a speedy recovery?

Take it out of the pot - put it back in a basket - and let it recover.

I was concerned about that - I do not think they like stagnant air or to be wet for any extended length of time. It may loose its blooms, but hopefully will grow some new roots and recover completely given time.

I had to remove a small vanda seedling from a pot it had entwined itself around, and it also suffered a setback when I first repotted it. Most of the roots just wouldn't retain water. I watered it every day and let it dry out. It is now growing roots all over the wooden basket I put it in. Even the roots I thought might be dead have new root tips.
