Terrestrials in S/H?

Has anyone tried growing terrestrials such as Phaius and calanthe in S/H? Would they grow in S/H or not?

While I haven't tried Phaius tankervilleae in S/H, I have every reason to believe that it would grow excellently in true S/H. I have a lot of experience with this species. It loves water!

Almost anything can be grown that way.

In addition to all of my tropical houseplants, tomatoes, and basil (in the greenhouse over the winter), I currently have phaius, phaiocalanthe, and even some ludisas growing in S/H culture.

I know houseplants can grow in s/h so I don't see why they shouldn't. You just don't need the all air holes.

Hi Hornet,
I've been growing my Phaiocalanthe and my Gastrophaius in s/h for about 8 months - still no spikes but the plants responded to the transfer well and are healthy. Go for it!

Ray, what do you use for fertilizer for the tomatoes and basil? Same as the 'chids? I started basil in s/h last week and did wonder about the fertilizer! You inspire now to try tomatoes too!

I haven't yet tried the Ludisia although I've done my other jewels with good results.

Paula, everything gets the same food, in my case the Greencare Orchid Special (MSU stuff) for RO water. Any fertilizer that is complete will work. Orchids don't get any appreciable nutrition from other media either - unless it decomposes, in which case we have a good chance of rotting the roots.

DO NOT grow tomatoes along side of your orchids. Tomatoes emit ethylene gas as they grow, which is toxic to orchids.

I am so glad I asked because that's exactly what I would have done! And, then I would have wondered what happened to my orchids as I was chowing down on the tomatoes.

Thanks!
