Oyster shell and s/h

When I had my paphs in bark I added pelleted limestone. I did it for the ones that grew in limestoney conditions. Now that they are in Hydroton and s/h trays I thought the pelleted lime would just wash out. Has anyone tried crushed oyster shell in with the LECA? I just got a bag at tractor supply but figured I better ask before I make a mess!

I think you'd be better off with a liquid calcium supply. Adding a small, crushed or granulated material will either clog up the works or continue to wash out.

To keep the moisture up for a Phrag I have in S/H I keep a thin layer of sphag over surface of the media. This would probably do Paphs well too and it would hold Oyster shell on the surface. Rays idea is also good. this is just another option.

I have a similar question which perhaps Ray could answer, or anyone. When I was growing in bark I used epsom salts several times a year. I've now switched almost everything over to Hydroton (not s/h). So, is this still a good idea? I would think that even if the Hydroton absorbed the salt, it would just wick it to the plant, which is the object. Might epsom salts screw up the Hydroton somehow?

I see no reason not to continue using the Epsom Salts periodically. It's quite soluble, so even if it starts to crust up the LECA, it should dissolve with subsequent waterings.
