| Anyone starting (or have) a collection of Phal species? With all the new Phal species being discovered/and-or more widely available now, and all the accomplished growers here I was wondering if anyone here has or is starting a collection of Phal species and/or Primaries they could share with us. Anything new and wonderful you've been finding? Last edited by mehitabel; 05-11-2008 at 12:48 PM. |

| My weakness - the species in phals. I snubbed my nose at phals in my early orchid growing because I had several white ones, a couple pink ones, a spotted purple one and a striped one. How many does one person need? But then I fell in love with the species :>) Doritis pulcherrima Phal. aphrodite (2) Phal. cornu-cervi 'Chin Yo' Phal. cornu-cervi v. flava Phal. phillipinensis Phal. stuartiana 'Sogo' (2) Phal. micholitizii (2) Phal. amboinensis (white bloom) Phal. amboinensis (yellow bloom) Phal. violacea v. alba Phal. violacea "blue" (2) Phal. javanica Phal. luddemaniana Phal. bastiani (Pearl) Phal. gigantea (2) Phal. pulchra Phal. bellina (4) (different crosses) Phal. hieroglyphica Phal. lobbii Doritis v. chompornensis Phal. fasciata Phal. equestris (2) Phal. schilleriana Phal. x leucorrhoda Phal. tetraspis Phal. tetraspis v. speciosa Phal. doweryensis Phal. floresensis 'TH' Phal. pallens 'Tejas' Phal. celebensis I also have several primary crosses that do not have a grex name yet and am anxiously waiting for them to bloom. This summer should be outstanding in the species/primary hybrid bloom season. The ability to bloom from previous year's spikes and new spikes always makes the bloom season special. | Patlee here is the violacea v. alba and I got it from Big Leaf in 3-07. Two spikes last year plus three new ones this year. ![]() For you Anton, my pulchra and all her babies living on a tree fern totem. ![]() And an individual bloom (I could supply the world with the keikis from this plant :>) ![]() Mehitabel got me to wondering what primary hybrids I did have now so took a trip to the g/h to see what lived there. Phal. Joy Micholitiz - Ludde Phal. modesta x javanica (in spike) Phal. Jennifer Palermo (tetraspis x violacea "blue' - in spike) Phal. mchiolitzii x celebensis (in spike) Phal. tetraspis x hieroglyphica Phal. Alice Millard (stuartiana x amboinensis) Phal. Taida Sunshine (equestris x tetraspis) (3) Phal. Penang Girl Phal. Princess Kaiulani (3) Also tetraspis x gigantea and bellina x sanderiana seedlings which I unflasked last summer. A couple might bloom this year but not holding my breath on it. I also have quite a few 3/4 species crosses where a primary was bred back to another species. Brooke |

| I am charmed by the small sized flowers and the compact plants of many of these species. I have a mannii (boxallii), and a mannii v. flava which I have not seen bloom yet. I am not much into bars and spots unless they are particularly attractive (personal, I know), so I may decide to put the mannii on the silent auction for what I paid for it. I have bought all the varieties of equestris that Baldan has. I am especially happy with these. Also picked up an (equestris x venosa) 'Copper State' HCC/AOS from a local hybridizer of Phals. It is a compact plant, but a bit bigger than equestris. I just got an established blooming keiki of Brother Sandra 'Splash' HCC/AOS, and the flowers are more beautiful than the pictures. Not a primary I am sure, but it has small flowers, a multibrancher, and it looks like it will be a compact plant.

| Out of curiosity there seems to be a lot of different phals with Brother in the name. Is there any kind of connection between all of them other than that they are phals or the ones that are crosses? My regal Bells X Brother Fortune looks very similar to my Brother Sarah Gold, the same colors are in the leaves just a little bit different of a pattern. Does any one know if that means anything, are all Brother types similar in color or is it just a name?

| Brooke, here was my favourite pulchra, which decided to cark it a week before I was going to bench the b@#%y thing last year. ![]() It had 4 flowering buds, the most ever, and threw a couple of keikis which also decided to "legs up in the air syndrome." So just wondering whether it wasn't a good plant. ![]() Hopefully the seedling I now have will behave properly as it is from good stock.

| Hmmm, I thought I posted, but I don't see it. I will post again. I am starting to lean toward species in general, but I would love to have as many Phal. species as possible. Here's my list: Phal. amboinensis Phal. bellina Phal. equestris (peloric) Phal. stuartiana Phal. Penang Girl (primary hybrid violacea x venosa) Phal. gersenii (natural hybrid violacea x sumatrana) I have my eye on a few, I have looked for a good pulchra for a while (I was inspired by Antons croaked pulchra), lobii, violacea v. alba, sumatrana..........I want them all

They take on the form of little birds, of lizards, of insects, a man, a woman, sometimes like a clown who excites our laughter. They represent the image of a lazy tortoise, a melancholy toad, an agile, ever-chattering monkey. Nature has formed orchid flowers in such a way that, unless they make us laugh, they surely excite our greatest admiration." Jacob Breynius |

| The prefix, "Brother" is the trade name from Brother Orchids in Taiwan. All of the crosses are given that prefix to signify who made the cross. My species "collection" is fairly small. There are Phal: fuscata (many, and available for sale); florescensis; bellina; violacea; gigantea; lobbi (several, and available for sale); stuartiana 'Larkin Valley'; and appendiculata. Might be forgetting some. |

| Well, lots of species fans out there. Congratulations, everyone. They really are special. I have only a few, and a couple of primaries. But I'm working on it. Patlee, Norman's Orchids has a bellina alba they are offering right now. Don't know if that qualifies as a vio for you. Brooke, that pulchra with all its keikis is just charming. And only one of a really impressive list of species and primaries. I hope you'll be posting pictures of them as the spikes come into flower. Some of the primaries I've never even seen pictures of. How long have you been collecting them, to have such a long list, anyway? |

| Mehitabel I became fascinated with the species about two years ago. I still have a few on my list that I really need :>) Anton here is a link to a mounted luddemaniana that keikis a little too. You can show your new pulchra what it has to achieve. ( Link Edited reason linked to another Forum ) I'm seriously considering taking the time to unmount my pulchra and use a big piece of cork bark. I figure a couple of long days, wire cutters and the patience of Job I can get it off the tree fern pole :>) Cynthia is the first name of your local lybridizer Eric? Brooke |

| I have a small collection of phal species and primary hybrids started. The one I'm watching right now is P. hiero which has a spike. Looks like only one blossom but it is a very young plant, not much more than seedling size. My peloric equestris "Zuma" has 4 keikis so I think it is happy, the Be Tris is about to bloom, maybe in a day or so....etc. I believe I have all the species plants Baldan's offers and some of they primaries. It is fun to collect the species, most are small and I have good luck mounting them on cork bark. Al |

| brooke, I think your phal violacea alba just might have award potential. I can't tell how big the flowers are but the form, colour (as expressed on-screen) and floriferousness is very good. It might be worth checking out to see if other violacea albas have been awarded and if so what their characteristics were.
