What a great thread! I spent time googling all of the species I didn't know. It was super fun, but I was amazed at how many were striped!

Anyway, i've got:

aphrodite
appendiculata
bastianii
bellina "Montclair"
equestris var rosea
javanica
violacea var Malaysia

I've also got my eye on the (deliciosa x chibae) that Oak Hill has.

Phal modesta
Phal speciosa 'C#1'
Phal pulchra 'TH'
Phal parishii 'Leesburg'
Phal lueddemanniana
Phal speciosa tetraspis
Phal taenialis

This is what I have so far. I have 3 others but two are NoIDs for now and one I don't remember the name but I think it's a hybrid anyway...

Ooo!!! I just have to join in on the fun! I have the following:

Phal. amboinensis
Phal. bellina ('Ingrid Ohh' x 'Joy' AM/AOS)
Phal. cornu-cervi var. flava
Phal. lobbii
Phal. tetraspis 'C#1'
Phal. venosa
Phal. violacea var. alba
Phal. violacea 'Blue'
Phal. violacea var. Sumatra

Wow, I thought it would be a LOT longer than this, hmmm, I guess I am going to have to buy more species! I am currently wanting to get:

Phal. equestris (a few different colour forms)
Phal. micholitzii
Phal. parishii
Phal. stuartiana

Oh, I can't wait to get started with breeding with these phals species and the hybrids that I have!

This one would be considered a hybrid and not a species...a primary hybrid to be exact. I have it and it is super, super cute! You would love it! If you want to see what the flower looks like, I posted a pic a couple/few months back.

Tell him I said you need it. It's small so doesn't take up much space at all.

Caroline -- The only major difference I've discovered between the species and the complex hybrids is that some of the species do better and look better on mounts. Many have spikes that display in a manner that makes them better suited for mounting rather than in a pot.

Oh, and w/some of the species the spikes will continue to bloom so don't cut them until they are brown and you're sure they are dead. For example...my modesta x javanica (primary hybrid I know) has 6 spikes and 2 or 3 of them are over 3yrs old and still bloom. There are quite a number of species that do this so again...just don't cut those spikes.

I don't have schillie but I'm pretty sure it blooms only once from each spike. I'm fairly certain on that but...anyone?

The schillie only blooms once so when the blooms are gone you cut it off.

The schillie and other orchids which have the grey-ish roots with the red tips like to dry out a little more than the 'chids with the green (when wet) roots with the darker green growing tips. The greyish roots are also *warty* in appearance and I don't have a clue why they have these.

The phillippenensis, celebensis and stuartiana are three more species with the grey roots. Maybe it is the mottled leave species only with this type roots?

Here is a list of my Phal species:

Phal. amboinensis - yellow type
Phal. aphrodite 'Ben Yu' AM/AOS/AOC
Phal. equestris 'River Bend' AM/AOS x 'Zuma Beach' - peloric
Phal. gigantea
Phal. gigantea 'Johnette' x self
Phal. hieroglyphica
Phal. javanica
Phal. lowii
Phal. philippinensis
Phal. schilleriana 'Pink Butterfly' AM/AOS
Phal. stuartiana 'Sogo' HCC/AOS
Phal. violacea var coerulea #7 x Phal. violacea var coerulea #3

The stuartiana is showing the beginnings of a spike and the aphrodite is showing something that might be a spike but it might be a root I should be able to tell in a few days. If either of these bloom I am looking forward to posting pictures.

Just the other day I bought a celebensis, so that will be added to my collection next week.

I also had a plant that I thought was a cornu-cervi, but after it bloomed it turned out to be something else, so unfortunately it has been added to my NOID list.

Justin

My orchid addiction was started with a NOID phal gift from a coworker... maybe many of you could tell the same tale! (Does that mean that NOID phals should be classified as Class I Controlled Substances? )

Anyway, the species phals that I have now are:

amabilis 'Irian Jaya'
amboinensis
bastianii
equestris
fuscata
mannii
mariae
schilleriana 'Pink Butterfly' AM/AOS
violacea
viridis

I have a mannii x philippinensis hybrid that I recently mounted on an oak branch, as it seemed to be growing an amazing number of roots outside the pot. It seems very happy on the branch, and has put out a big new leaf. I'm hoping for spikes soon ...

Have 6 NoID phals. That was what got me into orchids the first time, and what started my hobbying in horticulture so many years ago. Yes. Drug store NoID phals are a gateway drug.

Oooh, my kind of thread this.

I've recently started "collecting" species Phals, I wouldn't really call it collecting since I don't want them all - only one of each of those I like and that can survive in my conditions (this means now waxy flowered species and no warmth loving ones).

So far I have:
1 schilleriana which I've had for two months now. It's working on a new leaf and four new roots.

3 ordinary equestris of which one has opened its very first flower (my avatar). Its colleague is working on its buds and a second spike (the first hasn't even started to bloom yet). The keiki is working on roots, roots ans some more roots. The other two are also working on new roots and leaves. I've had these for about two months too.

1 of each of these equestris: 'Orange', 'Blue lip', rosea, and 'Apari' orange (?).

Primary hybrid:
1 Wiganiae (schilleriana x stuartiana)

I have an order placed at an European vendor with some more species and primary hybrids. They will be shipped to me as soon as the temperatures permits it:

Phal. celebensis

Phal. equestris 'Apari'

Phal. equestris 'Apari' pink

Phal. equestris aurea

Phal. equestris var. coerulea

Phal. lindenii

Phal. philippinensis

Phal. stuartiana

Phal. stuartiana var. nobilis

Phal. violacea var. Indigo x Phal. equestris var. alba

Dtps. Purple Gem 'blue' (Doritis pulcherrima coerulea x Phalaenopsis equestris)

I'm now debating whether or not to buy a Phal. taenialis 'Laos'... I haven't decided yet.
