brandank's Encyclia

Here is my project thread on my Encyclia. When I got this guy from Jerry it looked great and I decided it was going to get mounted. A few days later I noticed that 1 of the new growths was turning black. I decided it was time to unpot this guy and get him mounted. When I took it out I found that I had lost the growth. Now he is mounted and readjusting to his new home. The other new growth is doing great. Here are the first 2 weeks of pictures.

I like the way you mounted it. I don't see anything to hold it up. What did you use?

I think the one you lost was not a new growth but the oldest pseudobulb and the plant will often discard them

solay, I drilled 2 little holes under the chid' and used a twist tie to keep it in place on the piece of palm tree.

Not that much to report on this 1. The new growth is moving right along. Here are some new pics from 5/19

Where do you have your Encyclia located? I have mine as close to the windowsill as possible and now I got a second growth coming!!!

Mine is under grow-lights. It's only about 3 inches from the bulbs. It looks healthy enough, but it just sits there, trying to figure out what it's supposed to be doing. My windowsill area is pretty full- Maybe I'll see if I can do some re-arranging

Update Time. My Enc. has me a little baffled. The growth that was on the plant when I received it has turned brown/black like the first 1 and now has stopped any new growth on that 1. The Enc. has started a new growth on the side of the big bulb. This has developed since I have had the plant. I am a little curious if this 1 will make it. I have a few other Enc. growing within inches of this 1 and they seem very happy with new growth constantly coming out and roots that grab on to anything they can. Not so much with this 1. I just don't know yet, but we will see how this other new growth performs. I have large pictures on my blog if anyone wants to get a closer look. Just click the link in my signature.

The pseudobulbs look shriveled on yours. They didn't in the very beginning, but do in the first pics. of the mount. Maybe they aren't getting enough water on the mount? I'm wondering if there could be root damage....? Mine sat for the longest time without doing anything, but it's had a smooth pseudobulb all-along... Hmmmmm....Maybe a water increase? I'm just taking a stab-I don't really know- Do you soak it when you water it?

I'm also wondering if its lack of water? Then again my one smooth pseudo is starting to wrinkle, I don't know if it's from the new growths sucking the life out of it or lack of water. I have cut back on the misting on mine so I'm wondering if that could be it.

You said you are holding it with a twist tie. I gather this is one tie. Could it be too tight or could the weight of the plant be strangling the large pseudobulb?

Encyclia pseudobulbs have a tendency to shrivel as they age. Usually it is after the new growth. Mounting often causes it to happen faster.

That is one of the reasons I say that mounting often delays the first flowering. Those bulbs will probably never flower but it was unlikely they would have flowered anyway. You should see new growth soon and they will appear normal until flowering and then shrivel somewhat as well.

Mounted orchids do need water on a more regular basis than potted plants.

This photo is from last year. The plant was two years older than the project plants. It is hard to see but the three pseudo bulbs on the right flowered the year before and are shriveled. The two in spike are plump and the two new ones on the left are just forming.

This year my lanai is under construction and the plants are not getting watered regularly, plus getting sprinkled with cement grindings. The two pseudobulbs on the left are now both in spike but the buds are not forming well on one and all bulbs are slightly shriveled. This time it is lack of water.
