Hi
Am after some information about this plant. Mainly does it need warmth or will it be able to handle a cold Adelaide winter with some protection

It's difficult to know what kind of dendrobium you have because Dendrobium Chao Praya (note spelling "ao" not "oa") is only part of the name. Chao Praya Orchids inserts their name Chao Praya into the name of their hybrids. The names all have something after Chao Praya. None of them are just Den Chao Praya. The International Orchid Register / RHS Gardening

So without more infomation it's impossible to tell what conditions your orchid needs. It would help to be able to see the plant. we won't be able to tell you which of the Den Chao Praya it is but at least we'll be able to tell you which type it is and what culture it needs. Can you post a pic of it?

Hi kmarch
The dendrobium is Chao Praya 'Smile' X Chao Praya 'Gem'
Havent got the plant at the moment am thinking of getting one but the buyer didnt know if it would handle Adelaides winter. Got some Cooktown Orchids last July when I was at the Gold Coast and they have survive the winter inside. Would this one be the same or would it need more of a hot house?

This is helpful but unfortunately you still have the names wrong. The names should be: Dendrobium Chao Praya Smile and Dendrobium Chao Praya Gem. Notice there are no quotation marks around "smile" and "gem" because those names are not cultivar names (quotation marks indicate cultivar names) but rather those words are part of the grex (hybrid name). They are not different cultivars of Chao Praya, they are actually completely different hybrids. So what you have is actually Dendrobium Chao Praya Smile X Dendrobium Chao Praya Gem (no quotation marks).

Some more info: This cross has been named and registered. It is: Dendrobium Burbank Gift. Both parents are half Dendrobium Pinky which are Phalananthe (Phal) type hybrids. So to answer your original question: these will need heat over the winter. They are intermediate growers (13-18C night time low). You can get a culture sheet for them at AOS | Members Only Area
