Impressive list, to say the very least. You mentioned "the hospital area". Do you keep sick plants with pest and perhaps others with a fungal problem in the same hospital area?

Most of the hospital plants aren't really sick from a pest or disease. Most struggled very badly during the winter months when they had to keep coming inside my house. A couple I used a scale spray on that ended up killing or damaging a few of my plants. The rest are probably dried out and were light deprived so are struggling. Hopefully they will pull through...there are about 5-6 plants back there.

Thank you Shann for clarifying what you do. After reading your post I took my plants suffering from pests and separated them from my stressed orchids in different ends/floors of my home.

If there is a particular one you want to see a pic of let me know. Any that have flowered for me are photographed and stored by name in an orchid photo folder. If I don't have a bloom pic I will have a plant pic. I don't mind uploading those at all!

Well, I've ordered more plants already. I was only placing an order to get the dendrobium, but well...there were these Encyclias...

So to update the list these are going to be the following additions:

Encyclias can become quickly addicting...especially the scented ones. I live in the SouthEast in humid country....I can feel the cool weather slipping away already! I have a feeling that my plants watering needs are going to be in high demand very soon!

Not a problem. I will dig through my photo's later and post some for you. When my new plants come in I will catalog and photograph them too. I have a number of plants in spike and hope to have a lot more bloom pics by the end of the month.

Out of curiosity, how are you using the photos? Cataloguing your collection? If so, how do you organize them? I've been trying to figure out what a good system for doing that might be.

LOL...I will upload some of my latest photo's to this thread of some of my plants in spike.

As for the organization...I have a folder for orchid pics. I use the orchid name as the file name. For instance, my Enc. cordigera x Enc. oncidioides file name would be: Enc-cordigeraXEnc-oncidioides.jpg

If I have more than 1 image for an orchid I just add number to the end:

Enc-cordigeraXEnc-oncidioides2.jpg

For spikes or bloom pics I might use:

I've got a Epi. (tampense x plicata). I had to go look, but after I saw you reference tampense I realized I have a couple of others. I liked the tampense after seeing it growing naturally here in FL. I don't have it, but a couple of crosses. This one does seem to be starting some spike action. I wanted to move it to a terra cotta pot. It seems quite potbound in a clear plastic pot. I'm guessing I should wait until it blooms??

I have repotted plants in early spike before if they were new to my collection. To be on the safe side you could wait until it is finished blooming. I try and get all my plants in terra cotta or wood baskets if possible.

The two orchids I got yesterday....I don't know how these monsters are going to fit outside, but I am going to work on it tomorrow. And then all the plants coming next week...man...what have I gotten myself into?

I have an orchid coming today that I am really excited about. A den. capituliflorum. I used to have one up until this year, but it was so tiny (1 1/2" pot) and it just didn't make it through this last winter. Well, I found a much more mature specimen (4" basket) and hope that this time around I can have a plant that will thrive. I am hoping that this might be the year we buy a house with a yard so I can finally have a greenhouse before this next winter!

Hey thanks everyone! It has been a loooonnnngggg day of orchid shopping at an orchid show...lol. Terrible isn't it? I came away with a total of 10 plants. Two are for coworkers who requested them and 1 is to replace a smaller plant that I will also give away.

The ones I got for myself are:

Enc. alata x Enc. ceratististes
Enc. cerasistes x Enc. cordigera alba G.E. + Jesus

Enc. maderoi (I already have a smaller one but this one was much bigger)

For my coworkers I got one an Enc. Ginger Snap (nice fat pseudobulbs on this one) and the other a tree fern mounted Schomb. thompsoniana.

I am totally out of control!! Plus I got some supplies which considering all the new plants was necessary for repotting.

I will post pics later on. Got a kinda nasty headache and am waiting for my meds to kick in.

I really like this vendor...very nice group who brought some quality plants for sale. They are also big into Encyclia's and Enc. hybrids. At least 35% of their plants in display were Encyclias so that got my attention. I hope to see more of them in the future.

You obviously know about encyclia's, so I will ask. I have only one which is now in spike. Is there anything specific regarding the culture for them? From what I can see from your photo's, you cut the spike after blooming. Are there any that are sequential bloomers? Do you use fertilizer on yours? The one I have is Encyclia belizensis and I see from your list you have one as well. Thanks

Most Encyclias can be treated the same as you would Cattleyas. I keep mine in a dryer mix of either bark or aliflor and charcoal. I water them more frequently this way without overwatering which I had issues with in the past.

If you don't cut the spike after flowering you can sometimes get seed pods. My belizensis gave me 4 last year because I left the spikes alone. You can cut them after blooming if you are not interested in having seed pods.

The fertilizer I have is Schultz orchid food, but after talking with a grower yesterday I am going to get a secondary orchid food and alternate between the two for better feeding. I also will use superthrive and fertilome root stimulator for root growth. I usually mix this in a pump up sprayer and hose the plants down after I water them.

I have yet to encounter an Encyclia that is a sequential bloomer. All of mine either have a single spike or a branching spike. The belizensis often times branches like mine did last year.





The spot I have for this plant is on a westside railing and the spikes grew sideways into the light...lol.

I honestly have no experience with seed pods and did not do anything with them. I normally would have cut the spike, but due to neglect I left them on and "whallah"...Seed Pods!

Maybe someone else can chime in on how to handle seed pods. I would assume if you wanted to grow them you would have to know how to flask them, which is something that is totally beyond me at this point.

Yeah, I got those 6 Encyclias from Ecuagenera. 5 seem to be okay and one isn't looking so hot. I think it was the aspera but I will have to look again when I am home.



I have branched out into Brassavola's and their hybrids. I got a beautiful order in from H&R and many are in bud right now.



The Blc. 'Rio's Green Magic' was a gift from a local man who used to grow orchids and is parting with his collection. It has a huge bud on it and should be blooming soon too.

My what an impressive list you have! I noticed one we both grow: Epi. Mabel Kanda'Miyao' x Enc. randianum. For the first two yrs. I didn't think it was going to bloom and was going to cull it but one late Spring, it bloomed and had done so reliably since then.
Have you ever grown Epi. 'Red Glow'? I ordered one, the leaves fell off from the bottom about 1/3 of the way. I phoned the nursery from which I bought it and they kindly sent me a replacement. This week-end, I repotted it using a coarser fir bark mix. The medium they came in was almost a terrestrial mix. I was assured I was doing the correct thing and I hope so. What type of medium do you grow your epis? Thanks, Lee

You know...this is really embarrassing. I went searching on my PC for any image file documentation of that Epi. Mabel Kanda 'Miyao' x Enc. randianum and I cannot find it anywhere. It makes me wonder if it is still alive in my collection...omg!

I am going to have to hunt around and see if I can find this chid or if I let it perish... unnoticed.

I don't normally grow the reed stem type Epis. I have a couple crosses but I grow them all in the same dry mix (as my other chids) of aliflor and charcoal with some stalite thrown in. I keep my orchids in dry mixes because my growing environment makes them prone to root rot so I like to avoid any decomposing medium. I just have to water frequently, especially during the growing season.

Wow, you live near Andy's! Lucky you! I bought a couple plants from him a few months back but have to have them shipped to me. I would love to go to their orchid nursery one day.

Some red coloring isn't bad, so long as it isn't burn. You could try giving it a little less sun and slowly re-introduce it to higher sun levels. Mine usually gets filtered/dappled sun all day. Right now though my orchids are on carts so I can take them in during the cold nights and roll them back out during the day.

I am happy to hear you liked the photos. I love taking pictures of my chids!

I am pretty humid here as well but during the growing season will water about every other day. I think that mounted orchids could be watered everyday, but mine do pretty well with every other day. Right now we are having periodic cold snaps so I am watering about twice a week on the warmer days.

A really good source for Schombs is Plantio la Orquidea near Sarasota. They have a great website and a wonderful collection of Schomb species and hybrids. They are my favorite vendor at all the shows I go to. I am pretty sure they will be at Redlands and if you make a request they will try their best to bring it to the show.

My guess is because they are slow to grow into blooming size plants. If there is another reason I don't know what it is.

Maye? they are gorgeous though. And, since I grow outside, I definitely have the space for them. Expanding my schomburgkia collection (laelia/myrmecophilia) is one of my orchid goals this year.
