The new "babies" have arrived!

My flask of Paph. farrieanum x sib (Fair Lady x Extra Fair) has arrived! I'm so happy! They came through shipping beautifully. (Thanks, Sam!) I'm a little nervous, but I'm hoping to get some nice Albas out of the batch.

So are the Albas just mixed in randomly or did you order a whole batch of albas. Does that work like albinoism where it is unusual and a little rare?

The plants in the flask look nice and big, hopefully with the albas in the parentage they should be a few come out as albas.

They are a sibling cross. Each of the parents are partially alba, so they said that there should be some albas in there. It's a crap shoot, any time you deal with seedlings. The parents both have good sized blooms, also. I LOVE farrianum, so I think these should be pretty. We'll find out. I may pot them tomorrow. I've been sick, so haven't felt really up to it today. I just keep looking at them!

The flask is plastic. I want to de-flask, but I feel pretty crummy. Hopefully this weekend.

I have never tried crossing....But how can plants grown out of same seed pod be different??

Just the same as people...Same parents, but the kids all look different.(Except identical twins-and even they have their differences) It's all in the genetics. Since this is a species, and it's a cross between siblings, they'll all be pretty similar. When you get hybrids with many different plants in their background, just about anything can pop up!

Its like blue eye color in people, its a recessive trait that requires you to have both recessive genes in order to display that trait. In basic genetics you can figure out what percentage of a group will be with what trait. Some traits are much more involved but heres an example.

Draw a # sign. Dominant genes would be written in Capital letters & lower case would be the recessive genes. N= normal a= alba

If both parents are normal colored but carried the alba gene then the parents would both be Na. Now write them going across the top & down the side

N | NN | Na
------------------
a | aN | aa

Now go across and match them up in pairs. you would have NN, Na, aN & aa. That would mean you'd have out of every 4 babies, one baby would be entirely dominant with the normal color & not carry the recessive gene for alba. You'd have two babies that are normal colored but carry the recessive gene for alba (that they can pass onto their own kids) and one baby that will be alba and not normal colored (or carry the normal color gene). In all your looking at 75% normal colored & 25% alba colored. That is if orchid genetics are as basic as some human genetics. Im sure some traits from orchids go beyond basic genetics like the example above.
