I've sent my last Capsule out!

I'm excited because I just mailed out my third (and last) capsule for flasking. I'm using 3 different flaskers, and will keep track of how they do with each one. So far, I'm very pleased with the personal interest from the last 2. My husband is happy that I'm happy, but he doesn't get why I'm so excited about some little seed pods. Oh well, I just wanted to tell my fellow geeks!

Charliesangels-Patti bred two of her Cattleya orchids by pollinating one with another. To be grown from seed they have to be put into a special gel into a flask. When they come out of flask they are then seedlings that will need special care. It will be approx. 4 years until they bloom.

I'm figuring on a date around April of 2010 to get them back. (that's providing they grow!!) I'm nervous waiting for word from any of the 3 flaskers as to whether or not they're good. I'm hoping to work on small (mini) Catts. That's my goal.... I've already purchased a couple that I'll be crossing with these little guys someday. I can't wait. I know what I want, and hopefully I'll get it with a few surprises to boot!

I feel guilty going ahead of you! Mine, with Pot. in the mix can go 4-5 mos. (and that's what it did) Yours is doing what it should! 2 of my capsules turned quite yellow. the first I shipped out that way, as that's what that flasker wanted. The second, I cut the end off w/ sterile razor, and let the seed fall into a coffee filter. That's what that flasker wanted. (just the seed) The third one just started to turn a little yellow when it started to split. I put the whole split pod in an envelope and sent the whole thing to #3 as that's what they wanted. It's odd that the third one barely turned any yellow, and the first 2 were so bright. Good luck with yours, I think about you a lot! Depending on whether your flaskers want the pod before it splits or not, I would keep an eye on any changes. Watch the ridges of the capsule. If you notice a line getting darker, then it's about to split!

I want to know too! What is your cross, digitalgate? I figure it will be about 3-4 years after I get my babies back before I see any bloom.

Hi Patti, best of luck with the flasking project.
A mate of mine rang up the other day and asked my to cross some of my Cymbids for him. He is an amature flasker and has set up his own lab. And wanted some Cymbids to try and grow.
Well I crosses a nice soft pink onto a dark pink ( my first attempt with Cymbids).
Did several flowers on the dark pink as mother plant.
2 days ago I was in the orchid house and repotting.
I had moved all the flowering plants to one end to make room.
About lunch time a strong westerly gale force winds came up and by the time I got back out to check them .
They had all blown over a were smashed around. so I cut them all off.
End of project.
Anyone in Aussie land who can spare a standard Cymbid seed pod to help my mate out would be appreciated. (most likely you will get some plants back as freebees for helping!)
So in all Patti you are lucky to get to the flasking stage.

Cheerio
Ron

Oh,Ron! What a bummer... I not only feel bad for you about losing the seed pods, but having your plants smashed up really stinks! I hope your friend finds some stray seed pods to try.

Thank you Patti for thinking of me. I'll be waiting patiently with you. By the way, one of my new Angraecum seedling got some black spots on the leaves while I was away and I have a few fatalities. I'll post them later. Been soo busy catching up with work. I'm glad yours is doing well.
Ron, so sorry to hear that. I never even thought of making Cym. pods. It never even occurred to me to do that. Is it the same process? Maybe one of these days I'll be expert enough to try a Cym. cross. That would be fun. Good luck finding a pod for your friend.

Hi, thanks Patti & Solay.
At least it gave me an excuse to repot all that had blown over.
The loss of the cross was a neusance as I had never bothered to do any crosses before.
I find there are lots of commercial nursery in Australia that offer Cymbidium crosses in flasks so I buy these.
I know it is not the same as me doing it, but at least I get to have some fun with seedling.
You never know how good or pretty the flowers will be until some flower.
Cymbidiums usually start to flower about 2 years out from flasks so the wait is not so long.
Keep us informed on your progress Patti.
Cheerio
