I did a flask of L. purpurata var. alba and had dozens of protocorms left over. The flask should have probably been replated but I don't have that skill. I put drainage holes in a shallow plastic container, put moistened sphag in the bottom and laid some of the protocorms on the sphag. I had eight of the protocorms actually turn into small plants with roots :>)
I have since planted these into two compots and they are alive and well. The plant size is 1/4 - 1/3" in size. Did I need these - NO - but I have these "what if" moments and gave it a try.
Give it a go, they will die if you toss them but you might get some to live.
