out of curiousity

I know it'll be awhile before it happens but I was planning to try to make my own hybrid Cattleya sometime to name after my daughter. If someone was willing try to flask them for me, I'd split them with you for your effort & materials. obo.

Most flasking services will require a deposit of some sort, and then require you to purchase at least a couple of final flasks. Though breeding is actually very easy in practice, it pays to do the research on a cross. Look into the ancestry of the parents, look into other progeny those parents have produced, etc. Some things just do not breed well, and better to know ahead of time if there is such a problem. Although the initial cost is kindof high, if you are serious about hybridizing, I highly recommend getting your hands on OrchidWiz. I have so far done the leg work for things the old fashioned way (hard copy AOS Awards Quarterly (all the way back through the 70's) and Sanders' List of Orchid Hybrids). I plan to buy OrchidWiz, once I can afford it, as I recently got to toy with it a little and it absolutely blows Wildcatt out of the water. Much more efficient on time than my current method of on-paper flow charts distilled from a stack of books and magazines.

The main thing to breeding well is to have a specific goal in your hybridizing and to have a pretty good handle on the way the parents breed. Colour and shape dominance are important, ploidy is VERY important, and of course you want to make sure your parent plants are strong enough to support a capsule. Cattleya seed capsules take months to mature.

okay, i know that it is near impossible to name a plant. this is just the standard for carnivores and i am fairly sure that it will be no different or even harder for that matter to name an orchid. you have to have a picture published in a magazine or book, a total family pedigree(if possible), and a whole lot of other things. i would do some research on naming before naming an orchid. or you could just name it unofficially.

Well to be honest, official or not, I wanna name it. If for nothing else, then to get over that darn ugly Phal thats also named after my daughter Phal. cassandra. I saw one at my first orchid show and it was a small unattractive white Phal. Maybe it was the lighting but even my wife didnt like it. I figure if I work with a different genus then I should be able to name it Cassandra since theres no Cassie's in that group. I have found a Phal cassandra hybrid (Phal. lindenii x Cassandra) thats nice looking but None of them compare to the beauty of my daughter who just turned 8 mths. lol sorry 1st time dad talking.

How adorable!!! That's what I want to do is name an orchid for my son, Mason. He can't walk and when you hold him up to stand he tries so hard to walk. I love Gongoras and Stanhopeas. One looks like flying birds or bugs, the other, dancing puppets. I'd like to make a cross of these two and dedicate it to my son.

Thank you. We were at the pennsylvania farm show in harrisburg on opening day when I took these photos. She loves animals, especially our cat but when she gets excited the cat takes off. Atleast the barnyard animals stuck around. lol.

It looks like mutual infatuation to me!

I'm sorry, but this is simply incorrect. Anyone who crosses 2 orchids which have never been crossed before may register their cross (when it blooms) with the RHS. It's a simple as filling out a form, providing a pic, and I believe paying a small fee.

It is not necessary to have a picture or the plants pedigree or "a whole lot of other things" published in a book. A quick look at the RHS website and form for registering orchid hybrids will tell anyone this.

Can we please get in the habit of checking our facts before posting information?

Thanks KMARCH, there is so much Dis-Information about regestering an orchid that it becomes very confusing for anyone thinking about doing so. Especially for those of us without years of experience.
I haven't checked the board (yep, should have) but if there isn't a sticky about this subject I'd like to suggest one be created.
