Question Phaleanopsis 1st cross pollination attempt 6/8/11

Hey,
fellow geeks.....
I am attempting to cross pollinate my last two flowering orchids.
Sadly i have no idea what there names are. ;_;
But on the 6th of Oct i pollinated. Not only did i cross pollinate with the two flowering plants i have.
I also clipped a few flowers while at the market. and used the pollen from the flower heads. So i really dont know what they would come out looking like? ( if this attempt even works.............)
But so far the area i placed the pollen has closed and the flowers are wilting and falling off. the tip, where the pollen was placed is fat.
I am hoping thats a good sign?????? XD
Anyone know what i should be looking for next?
something that shows its on its way too being a seed sack?
umm this is my first thread.......
so bare with me at times lolz
I will of course post lots of pictures of progress....
thank you

You need to have posted 5 times before you can upload pictures I think. Just post some nonsense a couple of times.

I see you have 18 posts . I don't know how to from a computer sorry I'm no hellp I do all this from my cell phone currently
You wait for the pod to fatten the over time it will get a yellow hue to it before it splits. You will want to attach a coffee filter to the stem of the pod and close it up around the pod to catch the seed and help keep contaminents out of the seed just before it bursts. So when you see it get the yellow hue usually within a couple months or so for most orchids you need to watch closly for the split then get the coffee filter on it.
Good luck

Hey Ummmm. I have noticed that the flowers that i took the pollen from are wilting as well. Is this normal? or are all the flowers going to wilt, Now that i have triggered the "seeding process?" should i quickly pollinate all of them before its too late?
These are the ?'s that boggle my mind..... >_<

Yes, that can happen. If they are already wilting it is because the plant has started to restrict nutrient flow to them. I doubt you would get a wilting flower to pollinate so I think you would just be wasting pollen. FYI you will get best pollination results pollinating fresh flowers using pollen from other fresh flowers.

They look healthy and green. I notice a change in there stalk every morning. >_<
It's amazing how such a simple process like this could bring me so much joy & anticipation. I find it crosses my mind all the time. I wait & long for that small amount of time i can just sit, relax & talk too my beautiful plants.

Hey fellow orchid geeks.....
Not that this post will make much sense.... but, i have a few random ?'s to ask....

1. When flasking seeds. how many mother flasks can u make with one seed pod?

2. (Phalaenopsis) Flasks start off in darkness. ( closet ? )
Then it takes a year until i will see any green progress?
then after the first leaf forms have them in light. ( NOT sun)
is this correct? @_@

3. When there first flasked whats the perfect temp for the vessles?

4. Do i lose quantity if i flask the seeds fresh?

5. Can i gage what the baby orchids will look like by the parent plants?
or is it a total suprise?

5.
I read some where that i could take up to a year for the pod to be ready. But on here is says 110 days quite a few times. Another thing it say is that,
The Phalaenopsis plants are either male or female.
Which contradicts what i have already learned. That they have the parts too be both male & female.
and can even be self pollinated if desired.

Yep ............ ?'s that are just running through my mind.
Anyone on here from Canada?
I need a good orchid connection close to home. >_< not sure theres any orchid groweries near meh..... or flasking services..........
Yep so i'ma quit blabbbbin
thanks for any help.

P.s i'll update with pictures soon.
There lush and green, there really starting to fill out . ^_^

I'm still in the process of researching the Phals requriments to germinate also.
But the pod I have is about the 1/4 of the size of hybrid pods so seed must bee even smaller in mine the blooms was bearly the size of my pinky fingernail so it would be very genralized to say how many mother flasks in some cases I would think.
I'm interested in hearing what others have to say regarding the questions you are asking they are very good ones

1. Several since there will be thousands of seeds in the pod. We usually do two.

2. We do not germinate Phals in the dark. They are on the fluro light shelf with everything else.

3. If you are comfortable in a short sleeve shirt , the flasks will be fine.

4. I have no idea what your questions means. We harvest green pods so the seeds do not have to be sterilized.

5. Hybrid pods can be harvested in four months and species pods need six months for green pod harvest. It takes six months for a primary also.

Sorry can't answer the rest of your answers.

Brooke

Howdy, I'm from southern Ontario!

These will not be a species plant, and cannot even be a named hybrid if you do not have names for your parents. As you don't know the parents genetic background, you cannot know the babies heritage, and you cannot reasonably guess what they will look like either. The babies will simply be a NoID Phal.
Species plants are how you would find them in the wild, example, Phal. Bellina.
Hybrid plants are man-made crosses, example, Phal 'Yu Min Pearl'.
(I know I didn't do the naming quite right, still learning!)

However, it doesn't make it any less exciting, congrats on the pollination attempt. If you're overrun with babies, send me some rejects!
