Help identification of this Orchid, acquired seedpods..

Hello guys,

I have acquired a seed pod from this orchid this past monday in Indonesia from a friend (example image attached).
I have no idea of the maturationtime, or any knowledge of seedpods. I arrived back home yesterday, and it still seems to be in unchanged condition, but I expect it wil dry out or even rot if I don't do anything.

I have seen this orchid once before, and in Indonesia it was called Black Orchid, in Holland Black Beauty (although, being fair, it is not exactly that).

I have already contacted a nearby grower for the flasking, but I was wondering if any of you knew what species this is, and if you have tips for preserving the seedpod until I am able to send it to the grower.

Thanks!

edit: sorry forgot, this is the link I found the picture http://s563.photobucket.com/albums/s...d.jpg&newest=1

Hi SarinahL,

Are you sure this is an orchid? It looks like the flower of Tacca chatrieri, also known as the Bat flower... o_O

As far as I know, these don't need In-Vitro culture, you're better off trying to germinate them at home. Best method of sowing would be to sow scarified + soaked (In hot/warm water) seeds not too deeply in sterile soil, as well as keep it fairly humid and warm, possibly a propagator, as it is a tropical plant. I have heard germination can take quite a while, in the region of a couple of months...:L

Germination rate will decrease as time passes, you're lucky you have fresh seed, sow it ASAP! ^_^

I'm no expert but I hope this has helped...:L

Yep guys, I already had a reply from the grower, it is indeed not an orchid. Oh well, since when have the indonesians been known for their perfect english...
It does remind me of an orchid, but a ...deformed one

Well, it makes for a nice experiment, I'm going to try and do it myself.

Thanks all!

I've wanted this one too, saw it in a orchidgarden in Holland. That, plus an translating mistake from Indonesian must have been why I made the mistake.

Michael, if I get past the seedling stage, I'll be so excited that I'd be more than happy to send you a seedling.
I'm not sure how strict Australia is, though...

These are fairly comon in Florida but not an easy plant to grow. I remeber they come in two color varieties but do not remember the other color.

Jerry, it's white. Thats tacca integrifolia (we're on a geek website here, I'm obsessive, what can I say? )
The big petals are white, the centre with the "whiskers" purplish. As to not being easy..what orchid is?? Our middle names all must be "patience"..

Michael, I heard a story from my aunt once, that she had to even give up all fruit in between provinces when passing through..thats just absurd.

yes that might have been on the border of western australia, or maybe tasmania, they have very strong quarantine issues, i think it is to prevent fruit fly or some nasty that would really damage the agricultural industry.

oh and here they are known as states not provinces, just for future reference
