| Successfully fertilized seed pod, What now?
Hi, i was reading on here recently about fertalizing the orchid flowes, so i decided to give it a go myself, and a now have 4 fertalized pods, But am unsure of what i should do next?? I've been reading about how other people mature their seeds but as i know nuthing about this process, it has really more confused me than anything. So the main things i would like to know is how long might it take for my pods to mature? and dose anyone have a good way of growing them at home? Any help is much appreciated, Cheers |

Congrats on a successful pollination! What kind of orchid did you pollinate? You can't do anything until the pods are ready to be harvested, which takes several months. I can only tell from my experience with phals that phal pods take anywhere between 6-9 months to mature. You can cut them off as "green pods", i.e. when you see the first signs of yellow color on the pod but before it has opened. The other option is to wait until they are fully "mature" and collect the fine seed for drying. I found this link very useful: https://lab.troymeyers.com/flasking/...e.php?number=5 Good luck! |

i pollinated one of my cymbidiums. I've had a look at dry seed method and the green pod method, correct me if im wrong but the dry seed needs seeds to be put into different sulutions because they are no longer sterile and need to have any bacteria killed, and the green pod only needs the outside cleaned as the inside is still sterile. Does the green pod mean that the seeds wouldn't be as matured as the dry ones? giving less chance of successful groath? |

Orkidea's on track here. Reasearch a bit about home flasking, check out U tube type in orchid flsking and Franko on here has 3 part videos on there. Check out orchid seed bank project for some supplies books and media (osp) Aaron Hicks site. He's a great guy too Good luck! Emmaye

Thanks for the tips, i've had a look on Utube and understand the process a little better now. I have also found out that there is a lab near me that will do all the seed growing for you. Would it be a good idea to send one or 2 pods to them when the pods are ready and keep a couple to try myself?

Here is a link for an Australian lab, which was recommended to me: Western Orchids / Laboratory - Orchid Tissue Culture Medium Perhaps it's the one near you! See how many pods you end up with. I had way too many, 8 in total on two plants. I decided to send only 1 pod away because I'm committed to buy 2 flasks/pod. Each flask contains at least 25 plants, which makes 50 baby-phals. It's probably 45 too many... Orchids4me, I forgot who the link came from and didn't go back the post to find out. Thank you for it. It's excellent! I didn't look at the URL at all and wouln't have even noticed! |
