| Two deflasked, one flasked + 1 keiki -- help?
Deflasked ones: unknown type, got them already deflasked from a family member. Are these doing okay? The one more to the back has slightly floppy leaves, the other is more sturdy. I had more but they dried up They are on bark, I spray mist every morning, trying to get only the roots. Since yesterday I put them in a little plastic childrens 'greenhouse' that I still had lying around for tomatoes. Just to keep humidity up. I have no special equipment at all, should I do something more to increase survival chances? Then a, I think its called basal Keiki, that I got like this. The leaves are a little curly but I think they will straighten out. Kept on bark, doing nothing extra (yet) How do you guys think the survival chance of this one is? It's a phal by the way. And then a little oncidium I bought on the airport in Singapore. It has been like this for 7 months, not growing at all...I think I should probably wait a little longer.. |

Probably not..is that really bad? No good local nurseries/shops/etc. They get morning light, then I put em further from the window (only got a southern window, full sunlight about....ALL day long The seedlings...can't say this is measurable in inches, I think as tall as the nail of my pinky finger.. |

Okay, drove around a bit and got me some sphag! No idea if its premium grad, doesnt say. Now both seedlings feel floppy, the ground is moist, not dry or wet. What could be wrong? Color of the leaves is still good.

i a little concern about the dusty stuff found around the bark area. Is that soil i see? Usually when fresh out of the flask the plant will appear dry as it is adjusting to the new environment so make sure you have hot ,humid environment with moving air. Stale air will encourage mold to grow. For basal keiki - looking good. For oncidium - looking good. If you can provide shaded light near the window (no direct sun light) will be fine for this seedling. Normally they will take a year to grow to "deflask-able " size. |

Yep its soil, there are tomato seeds in the pots except for the one with the seedlings, they are on bark and as of this morning, in a mix with sphag and bark. The seedlings have been ou of flask for a month, they started to dry only now.. (if the limpness of the leaves is indeed b/c of dryness). |

if that is soil. I suggest you repot that plant wash it clean and put fungicides on the root and plant before you replant into fresh media and pot. There are fungus in soil that orchid cannot handle.

No, no, I just explained they are on sphag and bark. The other pots have soil because of tomato seeds, they left a little dust in the plastic greenhouse, they didn't get in contact with the soil.

| update on the basal keiki ---not doing good
It's not doing good. I attached pictures. Its longest root is attached to a rotting bit, not sure if it should be removed. It's now on a mix of sphag and bark and I'm afraid its had too much moisture now...or...I actually don't know what. D*** it. My camera's battery is loading, so took it with my phone. Sorry for the blurriness.. |

I'm going to suggest a few things. First, the sphag is good, but instead of watering, mist them to keep the top damp but not soggy. THis will promote the roots to grow and seek out the damp medium. Just mist the top of the medium, not the plants themselves. Keep them in a mini terrerium for awhile, they need the higher humidity right now. Low light until they get new leaves. The ones they have right now will eventually fall off, kind of like baby teeth. The next set of leaves will be much tougher and will be able to take more light. That little nubbin of a root is good, but that's the type of roots that you want to grow longer and when it has a green tip on it, you will know you have the culture correct. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice! I put the basal keiki some more on the top, only keeping the sphag moist and to keep the roots from suffocating. The deflasked seedlings I put into a minigreenhouse. I mist the sphag and the walls for humidity. I hope it'll work! I never knew the leaves would fall off. Does this mean the plants are still viable with roots but no leaves? |
