I personally would pot them in 50mm individually but don't take my recommendation. It works for me really well, I don't lose many using that technique but some say compots are better. I don't see any plants growing in compots in nature........

When I deflask if the plant is big enough, like Bolero I also put them into 2" pots but the tiny ones are put into a 4" compot.

If I use a bigger pot for the tiny plants I have trouble getting the media in the middle of the pot staying to wet with the edges drying out much faster.

I don't see many flasks in nature

I purchased these two flasks, Phragmipedium Eumelia Arias and Phragmipedium Sunspot x kovachii from Chuck Acker.

I potted them up already using tips from here and there so now I hope I did it right and they grow well for me. I panicked a little when I received them, I felt like a new mom! Chuck was very helpful and answered all my quetions I highly recommend him.

Can you still send me the that email? Thanks

Well it is a learning process! Mine are doing good so far, I have lost a few here and there. I potted some in a bark mixture and a few in sphag. I later changed them all to sphag because they were not doing so well in the bark media and now I water a bit less often.

Thank you for the photos!
They all seem to be upright so that is a good thing!
I know nothing about this type of orchid...
I hope some some other Geeks chime in with their thoughts!
Thanks again!

How long do phrags need to grow before they're blooming size? I was just wondering that this morning as I was watering mine, admiring at all the new little shoots.

I'm very interested in following your progress with these, thanks for sharing!!!

To be honest I don't know. I have some reading material that I just haven't gotten the chance to read.

You should join me in this thread with your progress too.

I haven't started any from flask, lol!

I just received my first few phrags recently, and one plant in particular seems so happy, it's starting new growths all over the place. I peek at them every day, hoping to see the beginnings of a new spike.

Do you know if phrags are seasonal, or do they just bloom when the growth matures enough?

In the one pic the little seedling looks really yellow. Is that just an unfortunate side effect form the flash or is the plant really yellow like that?

You can get a phrag culture sheet form AOS | Members Only Area.

Phrag kovachii hybrids are slower than others so patience and good culture is the name of the game.

Phrags like to be kept quite moist. Many, except the caudatum types are often grown sitting it shallow saucers of water. I usually see phrag seedlings growin in a moisture retentive seedling bark mixture. Intermediate to warm temps are in order and medium light. Phrags will probably be 3-5 years out of flask to blooming size, I don't know precisely how long for the kovachii hybrid but probably longer.

Thank you Kmarch. I'm going to print it out.

It is just the flash. The bottom leaf on that one is turning yellow though.

I didn't see a culture sheet for phrags.

Kevin, I appreciate your providing the links to the AOS website, but I think they can only be viewed by members of the AOS. I guess it's a good reason to join!

You don't have to be a member to view the culture sheets. Start on their home page: AOS | Members Only Area
  1. In the upper right hand corner, click on "Orchi Information".
  2. In the menu on the left, click on "Culture Sheets."
  3. In the sub-menu that appears, click on the orchid genus you're looking for.

I just noticed that there is no phrag culture sheet. Sorry about that. Phrag culture is basically paph culture that is a bit wetter and a bit brighter.
