Baby orchid

Hello

I didnt grow my baby phal from seeds but its still a baby.

How should I take care of it?
Is there any special conditions for those little things?
How often do I have to repot? (I already repot it because I didnt like the yellow medium and discovered almost all roosts were dead :-( )

Hi Kanak. How small is it? I wouldn't think you would need to repot again any time soon. I recall seeing comments that young seedlings need a bit more attention but don't recall exactly.

Hi kanak --

(Sorry - I originally missed the part where you said you have a baby phal.)

Here's a thread on raising baby phals that might help you.

Good luck!

A long time ago I bought a compot with 5 little phals in it. I let the phals grow a bit until there wasn't much space for the leaves, and then I took them out of the original pot and repotted them each in a separate pot. I didn't really treat them any differently compared to my older phals. One thing though--try not to let the small pots to dry out too much, and on the other hand, make sure the leaves are dry by night. Good luck growing your phal!

I'll second what was already noted here - careful not to let them get too dry as their roots are often not plentiful. Ideally keep them as WARM as possible - the warmer the better clear up to 90-ish (F)/ 32 (C). Same general conditions as regular phals EXCEPT they will not tolerate as much LIGHT. Good air circulation. Good luck!

I've actually got some baby phals coming also and was wondering if could put them in a northern window or if possible in the southern room with the other orchids but like behind something so that the light it gets is reflected from the walls.

Why is it so important to keep the leaf dry at night fall?

The flowers are dying, here are some pictures:

Hi Kanak, your Phal is not a baby, but a smaller sized plant. the care is the same as for a larger Phal.

What did you repot this orchid in? soil? bark? (It's hard to tell in the picture but it looks like soil to me if thats the case you need to re pot it again in in bark or another orchid medium because soil smothers the plant and it's roots need air. That would cause the flowers to die almost immediately) if thats not it its probably either a water or light issue.

Ok now I can see the little guy. It isnt a baby, but if you can take some clearer brighter pics we can help you better. Especially of the little pot and what you have it planted in.

The crown needs to be dry by nightfall in order to prevent rot. The best time to water your orchid is early morning, that way it has time to dry. You CAN water the entire plant, leaves and all (avoid the flowers though) but do it early in the morning so your plant has time to dry out.
