Catt Seed

Hi all....

I harvested my Catt pod (perhaps too early?) in fear that it was going to open on me and kept it in a coffee filter for a few days until I could properly remove the seed. I wasn't sure what to expect perhaps a dryer, heavier, powdery consistency. Is this just a bunch of "fluff" (chaff?)

A Cattleya pod can have as many as 1.8 million seeds so your fluff is many thousands of seeds on each other.

Since it opened the chance of flasking the seeds is greatly reduced if possible at all. Fungus will attack the seeds rapidly.

I am sure a lot of members will enjoy seeing seeds. Thanks for the post.

Thanks Jerry....

It didn't open on it's own....I did it and immediately put them in little packets of paper in hopes that I might have actual viable seeds. I plan on performing the whole dry seed sterilization process this weekend so wish me luck. I've successfully germinated dry seeds once and green pod several times now so I'm hopeful I'll be able to germinate (assuming their viable) these little puppies!

early or late harvesting . Depend on you doing dry or green seed pod germination. So no absolute answer here.

I sent my seed to my lab as dry seed like you have there. They can sterize it and if you check out my thread (step by step) you can see the results. The lab sent me a pic.

Yeah I have been following your thread Exasperatus! I am a glutton for punishment and will be performing the process myself....I wish I had caught it earlier, but as you well know, you wait and wait and wait and wait....and as SOON as you're not looking....SHAZAM!!!! So now I have a gazillion seeds (hopefully not chaff) and will be donning my mask and gloves this weekend!
