New Primary Just Germinated!!! :)

Hi All,
I just got an e-mail from Troy Meyers (Meyers Conservatory) that my new primary hybrid just germinated, approx. 100 seedlings. The hybrid is Paph. liemianum x Paph. niveum var ang-thong. Here are pics of the parents. paph. liemianum was the pod parent.

Hi Tom,

Love the Brachys, they're among my favorite Paphs. There's something you'll need to sort out if you're planning on registering this little charmer. There's no such plant as Paph niveum var ang-thong. There is a Paph niveum and there was a plant described as Paph ang-thong and/or Paph godefroyae var ang-thong but both have been reduced to synonymy with Paph godefroyae the currently accepted name. I have kept my paphs tagged ang-thong and the hybrids using ang-thong just in case taxonomists decide at some point ot separate them out.

Are you certain the Brachy parent is a species? If so it could be a niveum The staminode, what I can see of it looks niveum though the spotting is on the heavier side for niveum. Maybe niveum var ang-thong should be niveum x ang-thong which would be niveum x godefroyae which is: Paphiopedilum Greyi. The pic looks like it could be Paphiopedilum Greyi.

If it is niveum the hybrid has been unregistered as of yet (much to my surprise). If it is godefroyae (ang-thong) the cross has been registered. It's Paph Iluka Ruby.

Hi Tom, that is great news for you but it will be some time before you see the result of your labours. I have been thinking you could turn this into a project reporting the whole experience from the cross to the flower on the first plant to produce one and provide updates and progress of all the phases to the end item. Congratulations on the fist step.

I went and looked at the plant, the tag just says ang-thong! When I bought it the seller, said that it was niveum var. ang-thong. So now I'm not sure if it would be niveum var ang-thong or godfroyae var. ang-thong.

Well I can assure you it's not niveum var ang-thong because there's no such thing. If the tag says simply, ang-thong, then that's probably what it is. Paph godefroyae var ang-thong, Paph ang-thong, and Paph godefroyae are all currently recognized as being the same plant the currently accepted name of which is Paph godefroyae.

Wow. With 35,000+ species how does one keep up with names?

I look forward to seeing this cross in a couple of years. It should be great.

One does not keep up with all of the names, one only keeps up with the names of a few of his favorite genera!
