Step by step 2015

Ok here's the break down. I have two orchids I've decided to hybridize. I also received pollinea from two other members.

Step by step 2015

I have a little ID tags loosely attached so I don't loose track oh which pod is which. I also photographed the flower stem for comparison as the pods develop. Within the next two days, the flowers should start to close off to prevent any other pollinators from trying to access the flower.

The pollinia from C. cocinea and C. Skinneri are a lot smaller then from my two orchids. Especially that of the Potinara. Those were huge. I used a separate tooth pick for each flower to avoid contamination.

That would be the Potinara Hawaiian Prominence 'America' AM/AOS.

It is going to be the pod parent of a cross with Lctna. mighty Titan 'Parkside' AM/AOS and also with Cattleya skinneri.

Lctna. mighty Titan 'Parkside' AM/AOS will be pod parent to a reciprocal cross with the Potinara as well as the pod parent to a cross with a Cattleya (Sophronitis) cocinea 4n.

I don't think the potinara wants to be a pod parent

Here's the latest update.... Looks like only one is taking. It's the reciprocal cross between Titan and Hawaii.

Step by step 2015

Was hoping the Cattleya (Sophronitis) cocinnea was going to make it but I used a 4n which I knew may have issues. Now the waiting game begins.....

It depends on the parentage of the pod parent. Species or hybrid, some take longer then others. My first attempt was with the species Guaranthe aurantiaca. It took a little over a year or just about before it was ripe. Search for step by step to see that project.

They look like great plants to hybridise with. Looking forward to see how they develop.
