Step by step #2 Phal. hybrid

My first thread was with a Cattleya hybrid project named step by step. Now, I'm starting a second hybrid. With Phalaenopsis. Pod parent is Dtps. Youngblood pink cloud. Pollen parent, Dtps. I-Hsin 'The Big Bang'.

Pod parent-

I'll see about getting a pic of the pollen parent.

My first attempt, failed. I didn't take the anther cap off the first flowers and as a result, didn't see that I missed properly attaching the pollinia to the column. That annoying sticky tag, that helps the pollinia piggy back on pollinators, attached to the column instead of the pollinia and both buds withered and died shortly thereafter. I recovered the pollinia and re attempted after popping off an anther cap for better visibility. Today is 2 days post fertilization. The bloom shows good signs. The flower curling to close off from other potential pollinators. The stem, is not withering like on the first failed attempt. According to the AOS website, Phalaenopsis pods are ready for green pod harvest at 110-120 days, though I'm going to do the dry seed method as I did for my Cattleya hybrid. I'm sending most seed to a lab but feel inspired by others here to try my own home flasking.

If anyone has any interesting Phals that are not noids... I still have a few blooms open to swap pollinia.

On the table below is the envelope from the pollinia I was trying to mail to someone. They wondered why they didn't get it yet. It was returned today. The post office ate half the envelope and couldn't deliver it. Now to convince the post office I shouldn't have to buy another stamp for their screw up.

Those are both beautiful Phals. Hopefully the babies will turn out just as nice.

Very interesting, keep us updated on the progress, my exercise of polinating a Phallie ended in disaster a few years back when the pod was sent to my mate who had a lab, he left it sitting on the bench for a day and it busted open and seed got contaminated and lost the lot.
Never bothered again and top quality flasks of mericlons are so cheep and so easy available in Australia.
But good luck with your venture
