Seed Germination Temperature

Can anyone tell me if when the flasking is done, do you need to keep the flasks at a certain temperature for them to germinate?

Thanks

Hi, and welcome to Orchidgeeks!

This may be one of those things that depends on the plant being grown.

My limited experience suggests that with Cattleya alliance plants, germinating the seeds at Cattleya growing temperatures (room temperature, mid 70s F), worked just fine.

Just curious; what are you germinating?

Seed Germination Temperature

I'm trying to germinate cattleya crosses. But they have been in the flasks for over a month now and they don't appear to be doing anything. This is my first attempt. I use a Laminar Flow Cabinet so I have no mold. But I placed the flasks on the top shelf in the greenhouse and the temp does fluctuate at night. Would they benefit from a bottom heat source, or would this just cook them? I appreciate all the help I can get.

Thanks

I also have a couple of Miltonias in these flasks.

Thanks TwoWoodenSTicks about my avatar. That's one of our Grand Champions. When I'm not in the Greenhouse, we raise and show Chihuahuas.

I think my Cattleya alliance seeds germinated in about a month and a half. If kept at room temperature, they may not have been in flask long enough.

When they germinate, they will look like yellow-green cornmeal at first. A good magnifying glass or loupe is useful for checking their progress.

Thanks so much. I hadn't thought about using a loupe. That's a great idea. I do have what looks like cream colored dust particles across the top of many of the flasks. I'll check them with my loupe to see what is going on. Thanks to all for helping me with this.
