Phal project 2015

Ok, my Phal. venosa is in full bloom. So today, I pollinated it. One bloom with really great looking Phal. Samera and the other with Phal Penang Girl (venosa th X violacea indigo Norton).

Good luck!!

So, what are you going for w/this cross? I'm not a huge fan of venosa (nothing personal) because most are just kind of brown and muddy to me but Samera is GORGEOUS.

Is your Samera really flat or one of the very "hooded" ones? Maybe venosa will help to open and flatten it out more if it's one of the more "hooded" Sameras? Maybe? Of course venosa isn't super flat either, right?

Anyway...what's the goal? I'm always interested in what peoples' vision is.

Here's the Penang girl pic. Can't find pic of the other, must have deleted in error.

I'm with Katrina, was it a "I had them so I crossed them" breeding or are you after certain improvements in the plants.

Thankfully from pod to blooming it isn't nearly as long as the Catt family.

I've seen some gorgeous Penang Girls. I didn't realize it was a hybrid of those two species. The one you show is a nice deep color and I love that intense center and lip. If I were to buy a Penang, I'd want one of the one's I've seen on Peter's website (Big Leaf)...the color is different. I couldn't remember the clone I was thinking about - had to pull it up and it's Phal Penang Girl 'Chin Yo' - I can't paste the pic but here's a link...

https://www.bigleaforchids.com/coppe..._display_media

If you get some that bloom out like this...I'll buy one. Good luck w/it...you have more patience than I do, that's for sure.

I started this originally because I love Penang girl Ching reuy, but it's not available anywhere. Even Peter From big leaf sold his only one. Since venosa breeds yellows wondering if back crossing it to this girl will make something similar or if the cross with samera will since samera is half violacea and bellina. Good news, they're Phals so I won't have to wait forever till they first bloom like I do with cattleya.

Ok, Latest post pollination update. Penang girl didn't take but the Samera appears to be ok thus far. I have the persons address to whom sent me the pollinia to try to get a pic but I cant remember which forum I contacted them to get it.

Anyone care to speculate what might come out of this crossing? Since this is venosa x Samera (violacea x bellina) that is forming a pod. It'll be half Penang Girl (venosa x violacea) and half Josh Irwin Ginsberg (venosa x bellina)

examples -

Penang Girl - Phalaenopsis Penang Girl

Josh Irwin Ginsberg - Phalaenopsis Joshua Irwin Ginsberg

I am rather excited to see the results of this!
I know it will be some time before we can see the baby orchids and then more time before there are blooms but I think the results are going to be very nice.

I checked it last night, there is deffinately signs that a pod is developing. The bloom never fell off. I was starting to think I didn't hit the mark & it was just still in bloom but now it's noticeable.

Are you talking about the dead orange bloom in the center of the picture, close to the cork mount?

Brooke

Sorry I finally see it and it does appear it has taken. With all of the green in the picture, it was very hard to see.

I noticed the past few days, the flower was changing from green to yellow. I'm in panic mode, is it aborting? Or getting ready to dehisc? It didn't swell as large as my cattleyas do.this is my first phal hybrid.

Thanks Brooke, Peter Lin also came to that conclusion. Also suggested my venosa may have been to young. I'll see next year if the pollen donor is willing to try again.

Good news though, my leudemanniana is about to open up and I still have some Phal. Bear Queen pollinia.........

I think I have an orchid problem.

Sorry it didn't make it. I was looking forward to someday seeing the results. I hope you will try that cross again. Good luck with this next attempt. I really am looking forward to seeing some baby Phals!

It's official, it fell off this morning. 74 days, to short for good seed. I'll be trying to cross my Phal. Leudemanniana with LD's Bear Queen soon as the first bud started to pop this morning. Looking forward to that one blooming since it grew 2 sub spikes so I will have more flowers to look from it shortly.
