Orchid seed germination media

I need some help here from our more experienced orchid growers here. I have two seed pods on my NOID Den. I decided to try and flask them myself. Here's where I need help. I need a easy recipe for the seed germination media( the agar ). I wonder if anyone knows any recipes?

I do not have bleach and alcohol for sterilizing the tools and pod itself. Will detergent work?

Thanks in advance.

Here is a thread you might find the information you are looking for:
http://www.orchidgeeks.com/forum/orc...-flasking.html
I have never flasked seed, but am thinking certain ingredients/material are needed, without substitution...

I can't link to the site directly, because it is a blog (linking to blogs, I think, is not allowed on Orchidgeeks), but Google the phrase"How to grow orchids from seeds – kitchen style" - Dokmai Dogma. You will find it.

I have some Cattleya alliance seed (pods green/growing right now) I hope to sew soon using the materials and methods listed there. I have purchased most of the materials needed, or already owned them. It is not super-expensive, but not cheap either. I am doing this for the learning experience.

For sterilization, detergent alone will most likely not work. This site says use household bleach with a little detergent added. You may find other sterilization options out there as well.

Good luck!

Use a good, complete soluble orchid fertiliser (with calcium and magnesium) in distilled water at normal rate for your orchids (which is probably 1/2 to 1/4 full strength).

Per litre add:
- 20 grams sugar
- about 8 grams agar powder from an asian grocer
- about 20 grams not too ripe banana (helps to bring the pH about right too)

Blend in a blender and pour straight away (so the agar doesn't settle) into your flasks to sterilise

Works for me .

To sterilize things you will need something with sodium hyperchlorite in it. Our bleach over this way is from 4-6% but there is many other things that have this ingredient. Pool clorine and any other thing that kill algae and bacteria.

I dilute the 4-6% stuff at a ratio of 10%. ie for every 100ml I add 1 litre of water.

As for orchid media, P668 is good for germination and replating for most genera. Some genera might need 1/2 strength.
Just add 20 grams of fructose (ie 10 grams frozen banana and 10 grams of cooked potato) for replate media.

It does suit me, but you have to buy it on the net... My parents don't allow it. But I like TropQLD's media recipe. It's simple and affordable, since I'm not even twenty yet.

Can I use hand sanitizer to sterilize the pod and area? According to the sanitizer, there is alcohol and kills 99.9% of germs.

Please send me send it to you with the whole process. You can use glass jars with iron lid for sowing seeds? What better flasks to use?
