A little practice

Patticake was gracious enough to send me Several newly deflasked noid Cattleyas to practice on while I wait on my flasks to develope. I did one compot in Sphag. with 7 and one in s/h with 3 in that. The s/h compot lost two leaves. In the sphag I lost 3 seedlings. So far I've had them for 17 days.

That was nice of Patti. Sounds like a fun project. Don't you typically lose a few because they are so small and delicate?

I'd try that before I'd try the seed thing in sterile agar, etc. like doodlekitty and others. I'm not attentive enough. I always experiment with seeds and cuttings but I can just pop them in dirt. (non-orchids)

Actually.........Doodlekitty is finding seedling care a heck of a lot harder than the whole flasking process! Man these babies require a LOT of attention.

Pics

Here are the pics. the ones that were in sphag I cleaned up & have potted up in s/h like the others that are doing great in it.

1st 3 noid Catts in a s/h com pot-- lost 2 leaves at first then no negative developments.

The remaining compot in sphag. Not sure if its the seedling pot or its all this rain & high humidity we've had here but the sphag is staying wet along time. I lost 4 of 7 that were in the sphag. I cleaned these up & moved them to s/h which is working well for me with the others.

Ru kidding! no way could I do the flasking! I had trouble with the moss staying wet too, really badly in the plastic pots. My babies I put in terracotta pots dried out a lot better so I transferred them all into those. The other thing that helped heaps was I bought a flexible rubber coated heated wire for hydroponics an sat the pots on that. It was heaps cheaper than the thermo controlled heat pads an u can adjust the heat by puttin more or less wire under them.
