Potting up a new "rescue"!

O.K., So I said I wouldn't get any more... I was in Lowes the other day checking out their after Christmas stuff. This little guy was sitting there looking like crap. I had to try. They gave it to me as it was about to hit the trash heap.
The name is Dtps. (Newberry Parfait x Fajens Fireworks).
The first shots are "before"- then shots of the roots. Most were papery and soft- nothing there...Then a shot after I cut all the bad stuff off. I then soaked it in a dish of water with a couple drops of Superthrive. I scrubbed the pot that it was in, and potted it up to the base of the first decent leaf. It was is soggy sphagnum moss! I re-potted it in a bark/charcoal mix. ( I use Schultz) I then soaked the whole pot up to its rim in the same dish of water. I'll keep it moist, (not wet) and give it bright-indirect light.

I'll post updates here- good or bad!

Nice challange :-)
Don't you think the pot is too large for the tiny root mass? I would appreciate if you let us know how this baby revives (or not).

The after picture doesn't even look like the same plant. Good job!! Keep us posted with pics. I just bet it makes a full recovery.

It's the same pot it was in, and given that I'm using a well draining bark mix instead of sphag, I want to make sure that there's enough moisture. A smaller one might dry out too fast with bark. Take into consideration that I'm in a heated home right now with low humidity. I also need to allow room for (hopefully) new root growth. It's a "free" experiment!

Charlies' Angel- Thanks for your vote of confidence! I'll post updates here if there's anything to report! I hope you're doing well! It's good to see that you've been back on lately! I missed you for a while!

Thanks Patti,

It's good to be back. Oct and Nov were bad months for me. I was in the hospital twice then. Once for 7 days and then back for surgery and another 15 day stay. I've had enough of hospitals to last me a long long time. Now I'm back to my old self. Good or Bad! LOL.

I have been reading the posts for awhile, but being new I really didn't have much to say. I certainly don't feel qualified to give advice unless it's what doesn't work. LOL.

Margaret

Oh, Margaret! Please don't feel un-qualified to give advice! We all give our own advice, and it all shakes out in the end! I'm sooo happy that you're here! I need to learn from everyone! We're lucky that you're a part of our lives!!!

Yeah, I think whenever any orchidgeek says they're not going to get any more, we all pretty much take it with a grain of salt. We've all been there and we've all said it. It seems orchid lovers say these sorts of things until they have grown for about 5 years or hit the 200 plant mark whichever comes first. I only genuinely worry about those people who say it then actually DO it. There's something wrong with that.

Lovingly signed, Kevin your happy orchid enabler.

This is just my opinion but I believe there are 2 kinds of important orchid info:
1) all the facts and figures
2) a grower's experience
And I believe both are important. I also believe advice on what not to do can be just as useful as advice on what to do.
