Scaphyglottis radiata - Help!

Interesting plant...but I can't find info on it anywhere. The vendor I bought it from told me they grow like weeds if happy...like bright light and since I'm growing in the house (rather than a g/h) I'll want to soak it just about every day (maybe even add sphag to the mount) because they do like their moisture...oh, yeah, and good air circulation. I didn't ask too many questions...I should have but I thought I'd be able to find out about it one of my books and/or on the web.

I've searched and searched and searched....I can't find anything on Scaphyglottis radiata. I even did a search on the World Checklist but there is no listing for a radiata...a bunch of other Scaphyglottis species...no radiata.

Anyone know it by another name? Could the tag be wrong?

Also...any additional (to the above) cultural advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Here's a pic...sort of looks like a bamboo.

Sorry, I can't help you, but it sure does look cool.

Hi, I looked all over for something about this, even tried other names. I did find something about the radiata maybe being Scaphyglottis graminifolia. You can get a culture sheet for the graminifolia from the Baker's culture sheets, but you have to subscribe. I am a subscriber, and I have found their info very helpful.

Brookn -- I believe I found the same thing you did about the radiata being graminifolia. I'll have to wait for flowers to tell I suppose. I've seen the Baker's Culture Sheets but have been hesitant to subscribe. Do you find they are usually pretty detailed and thorough?

Amazing...so many different plants in the scaphyglottis and yet no info about it anywhere. Hmmmm....I suppose it's the teeny tiny...almost invisible flowers...perhaps they just aren't popular because of that. ?

Thanks anyway everyone.

I'll just give the vendor a call on Monday and pick his brain a bit more...something I should've done the other night.

I have that book too. Easy mistake because of the similarity of the 2 names....what you saw in the Ortho book is on Spathoglottis (commonly known as a ground orchid) but this is a Scaphyglottis. The names are very similar for sure. Thanks for trying though Lisa...it's much appreciated.

It looks like this one's going to be a tough one to find out more on.

No worries Lisa....names are similar. Nothing online I'm afraid.

I'll just give the vendor a call on Monday. Quite frankly, I really should've asked more questions at the time of the purchase...I know better than to buy something w/out getting the details. I'll just chalk this little event up to the orchid addict in me...you know that little voice in your head that says...buy, buy, buy!

Couple of things.....Nemaconia graminifolia is the proper name for Scaphyglottis graminifolia. Has been for a long time so it's no recent name change. The original Nemaconia graminifolia name dates from 1836 although it has not necessarily been the proper name for that entire time period.

There is no indication on the Kew checklist, the International Plant Names Index, or OrchidWiz (which is simply a derivative of the above) that any plant has ever been known as Scaphyglottis radiata. I checked the entire Scaphyglottis genus to see if any plant in it had ever been known as radiata. In addition I checked many plants with the species name "radiata" in any genus and found no synonym that was Scaphyglottis radiata. I will admit that I did not check every single "radiata" because on the number, but I only skipped those I think could not possibly be what we are looking for.

With reasonable confidence, I don't believe Scaphyglottis radiata has ever been the proper name for an orchid. I reserve the right to be wrong without serving life in prison.

Too funny! No worries...if it ever turns out to be a correct name...no life sentence will be imposed.

I really, really appreciate your doing so much research on this. I know I spent some time yesterday going through many of the Scaphy. on the checklist looking for one w/the syn. of radiata...couldn't find a darn thing. Quite frankly I got frustrated and quit looking. The time you took looking into this for me is very much appreciated!

I'll check into culture using this other name...as well as add it to the tag.

Thanks again!
