Experts only

I was going to bid on this one but they say for experts only, is rare and only selling one. They grew it out of a bottle 8 years ago, anyone recognize this type? Tara

I like them both. Tie dye a very fitting name. As for number two very cool. "experts only?" that would count me out. I say give it a try if not too expensive and you are game. You seem pretty good with the orchid thing.

Well seems it is easier to be pretty good with the phals, but everything I know came form here and the experts here. I stunk at the Cattleya trial. Had to rehome them, they would not bloom and had no room. Also sold my Sharry babies they were bigger too no room. Then I replaced them with phals at least I am gettin results and blooms, well buds anyway Tara

It is either Cochleanthes amazonica or Cochleanthes Amazing (Coch amazonica x Coch discolor). It is not rare. It is not one for the "experts only." I suspect the seller used these terms to entice bidders. I unfortunately see that from time to time on eBay, sellers saying a commonly found orchid is rare or somehow exclusive when they're not.

Here's a good Cochleanthes culture sheet: Culture Files - Cochleanthes discolor

Hmmm it needs 80% Humidity. I cant keep over 30 right now when not at home. It is a cool looking orchid. It is not very bright of them to make those claims when there are so many experts out there.Tara

Tarad it's not a Baldan's tie dyed. That's one of Pine Ridges babies. Baldans used to sell some of PR's stuff too. to be exact the name of that one is Phal Brother Sandra 'Splash' HCC/AOS

Oh yeah, BUY HONEY BUY!!!!!

Kevin you are spot on as usual. It's Cocleanthes amazonica, I saw the listing for it. The grower says (in the ad) "they hate to be cold, and like to be left alone". Now from what I can tell my orchids like to have friends lol, poor sad antisocial little thing.

Yep...I'm jumping on the "GO FOR IT" bandwagon!!

As for the Cochleanthes, I don't grow any and I'm not familiar w/their specific care however, I do have a few plants that state they need really high humidity and they are doing just fine in my heated house..currently hanging the zone of 42%-48% RH. Granted, I've only had them about a year...some less...so we'll see what happens over the long haul but you'll never know what is possible unless you give it a shot.

Oh, I've lusted for Baldan's Tie Dyed before! It's a beauty. Is it on Baldan's e-Bay sales? (I haven't checked their listings in awhile)

Too pretty to pass up. The coloring looks very dainty.

When you buy on Ebay do the plants get to you in good condition? I would think they might be hard to pack for mailing.

Lol thanks all. The splash is gorgeous. Anyone wanting a monster phal baldans has the Red Devil HUGE ex large for sale.

AL there are three available with one day left to bid. Get in there and get one! The bid is pretty low right now.

Charliesangel I have had for the most part very good luck on ebay, however stick with reputable sellers others recommend. I have only been into orchids for about three years now and am by no means any kind of expert. I can say there are a few I buy from on ebay that I have had no trouble with. Nice healthy plants everytime. Tara

I dont care how many heat packs ya have in there the thing wont make it subzero. Especially if I am not home and the PO guy doenst think to take it to a neighbor. Tara

Tara, I think we are in the same deep freezer, just at oposite ends! Our minus 30F arrives tonight. I did receive a beautiful plant yesterday and glanced at the temp. as the postal truck pulled into the yard...............plus 9F. The plant is beautiful and in perfect shape. It depends on the vendor and how well they pack, look for "we pack for Winter shipping" in the description, or write before you bid and ask what precautions they take.
Al

Al,
I think Baldans would do well. I had a recent mishap and am a little gun shy with an orchid seller who sent my precious little mini to the wrong address 2 hours away to my mom who is in assisted living. It sat out in 20 degree weather for about 12 hours or so. She then yanked it out put it in SOIL in a huge pot before I even knew where the orchid had landed. Believe it or not it is still alive today and blooming from what I hear. I got my money back and so did the seller, paypal glitch. At any rate I trust Baldans shipping so perhaps if I did win one they would hold it till next week for the Jan thaw lol. Tara

I didn't bid Tara, so we didn't fight over it. LOL Baldan's will list it again I'm sure. I think this is the third time I've seen in in their auction sales but I usually have a number of bids going so have to be carefull about the expenses should I win some others...

LOL Al it would have been fine if you bid against me. I live like this...if God wants me to have it i will have it. I can afford much so I really have to draw the line on what I pay for an orchid if I decide to get one. Also it is fridgid cold here so it was better for the orchid anyway. Tara
