Pleurothallis fornicata

I just bought one at an orchid show, and I've never had one like this before.

I've looked online, but can't find any culture info.

Does anyone know how to care for this plant?

Temp, lighting, watering?

ideal temps are 50F night, 65F day year round, although it can handle temperatures up into the low 90s
it does best in full shade. if the leaves start to turn yellow, your light might be too bright.
keep the humidity high (around 80% is good)
the potting material should be well drained, but must be kept moist.
since it doesn't have pseudobulbs to store water, it's very important to keep it moist, and the humidity high. don't let it dry out for more than a couple hours at a time. this is one of the less forgiving species, and serious damage can result from dry conditions. good luck

It grows up to about 2400 Metres high in the mountains and is considered cool to warm.....Average night temp is apparently around 58F. That is average for all seasons.

I would think in winter it would take temps similar to Masdevallias, I would be careful getting it too low though. What are your minimums like in SF?

What a bizarre little fella! I wouldn't be able to keep it cool enough all year here. Maybe someday when I can have a special room just for cool growers. Good luck with your new chid!

Well it should be fine, I would think it could take less than 50F.

Is it just me or is the species name somewhat amusing?

No, it's not just you but I find the name 'Coelogyne' funny, too. Hell, 'orchid' itself is slightly obscene if one knows medical terminology.

LoL, Oh my if you were to go through all the names I think half would make some blush. LoL. Even some of the orchids that I've seen are a little "pornograghic", LoL. Too funny.
This picture is of an Anoectochilus chapaensis bloom.

Picture from The Orchid Gallery.

Jenny, if you read this post just scroll up to the first post I made on this thread. You will find it there. I thought that attributing the pic to flickr would be correct; apparently I was in error. Hence the second attribution.

You guys are funny! I didn't know there could be so much "orchid humor". Getting back to the name thing, if anyone deals with animals (I do *sigh*) I always wondered how Crypt Orchid got it's name. heh heh

I believe, Orchid gets its name from the greek orchis = testes It was so named because of the similarity of its tubers/bulbs to said bits.

I'm sure some will correct me if I am wrong

That's why I said that I find 'orchid' itself a bit obscene. Here I am collecting, erm, bits.

'Coelogyne' is Greek for 'hollow woman' a reference to the erm, lady bidness.
