newest rescues: Love Castle Kurenai & Lava Burst Puanani

i saw these two guys languishing for the last 2.5 weeks on the shelf of a local grocer. they're small specimens, so it may be the reason folks kept passing them up for bigger displays of Phals and such. i had to intervene - when i last returned the Lava Burst bulb was starting to shrivel

so, newest to my growing collection -

01 SLC Love Castle Kurenai
02 Howeara Lava Burst 'Puanani

i'm going to try my hand on Catt's again so hopefully this lasts as long as my last plant.

does anyone else keep these?

PS sorry for terrible img quality: camera phone.

I have a Howeara Lava Burst (Chian-Tzy) which I have in fine bark and a clay pot. It has bloomed for me a couple of times since I acquired it in Feb. ) 2007. The blooms don't last terribly long, but they are pretty--a kind of burgundy color as I recall. Sorry I don't have a pic.

Nice! I know you'll give them a good home! Slc. Love Castle 'Kurenai' is beautiful! I love the color. (although I've never met a Catt. that I DIDN'T like!)

thanks, Fishmom and Patti! the trick now will be finding a spot it likes. my last Catt (similar to Slc. Jungle Beau) did very well until a house move; didn't like the newly assigned area and lost a longstanding member of the collection

hopefully i can start over w/ Love Castle.

Fishmom, i used to have a similar variety of this that was also compact but bloomed on flower spikes that were nearly a foot long. flowers were pink and burgundy... i'll have to look up the name of that one again.

I suspect it will do well in a sunny east window or in the indirect light of a south window. It will like fresh air and air circulation. If you have not yet done so, check out the culture sheets fo cattleyas and Oncidiums here on this forum or at AOS | Home I think they will be useful to you. Give them a read and let us know if you have any questions.

These are really nice plants and we want you to be successful with them and enjoy them so don't be afraid to ask, ask, ask.

thanks, Kmarch! right now it's in a West facing view; i'll keep the air movement in mind. sounds like Love Castle should stay in my room, then - no argument

thanks Kid A and kmarch! i'm surprised folks kept passing this up. the cam does no justice for Love Castle - you can barely tell that there's a hint of yellow orange in the lip, and it's more burgundy than pink.

you never know what you'll find when you're not on the look out.
