I came across a recomendation for this somewhere and I cant seem to find any firm info on it...
has anyone tried potting a phal so its hanging upsidedown?

If anyone has tried this can they please give me some instructions? it would be very much appreciated.

Why not just mount them?

Hi Evangeline.
One would wonder why you would try to pot a Phallie upside down.
Each year I repot mine so the remain nice looking and upright.
Flower spikes are either trained upright or in a gentle arch.
That again is how I like to show the flowers off.
That suits my style of growing a plant..

As stated if for any reason you would like it to be upside down try mounting it.
It is your plant.
Best of luck
Ron.

They don't generally grow upside down in nature. It's to the side, with the leaves hanging down.

really? I was reading that in nature they tended to grow on the underside of a branch which is why I wanted to try it this way.

and yes, I did want to mount it, sorry for not being clearer. I have had a look for instructions and cant find much other than pictures and praise of the idea.

There are quite a few threads from me about this...I even have pics to show it. I have mounts on cork, on real tree branches and even mounts on clay p;ots.

I just read last night that they grow upside down and that is how they avoid getting crown rot in the wild. I always wondered about that-how they managed to get rained on and not die from rot, as seems to be the most prominent problem with phals. All of mine are upright, but I, too, have been thinking of mounting all of my phals upside down.

yes but you dont have any instructions on how you did it, just photos of it and instructions that assume the person reading will be familiar with the correct way to mount an orchid.
Im not familiar, Im very new to the orchid world

Phals grow on the sides of vertical trunks and major limbs. Not on horizonal limbs so they could never be upside down. Mount them and hang the mount vertically. Most people's problems come from potting them upright and allowing water to sit in the crown. If you are careful to remove any collected water, they do fine in pots upright. While there is no one-way to do anything, upside down presents several problems for the grower and is unnatural so why do it?

I did mine out of curiosity and was totally experimental. Along with my "upside down Phal" is one that is sideways on another clay pot. What type of problems should I be aware of by having the plant upside down?

I know this is experimental but as of right now they are truly thriving...I get joy watching these roots flourish...the one on the side of the pot is also doing well.

The problem with upside down phals is when you get big, heavy spikes dangling and the base of the plant is not supported, a big breeze/wind happens, the plant will break :>) Keeping the stem supported is important so it doesn't break. Ask me how I know :>)

How do you know? LOL!

So you basically have to follow the same procedure as you would when the plant is upright.

That for the heads up Brooke...now I know.
