Watering While On Vacation..

I just read that people can lay one end of a towel around a vanda's roots and have the other end in a container of water to keep the plant moist while away.

I wonder if the African violet pots would work the same way. They consist of an unglazed clay pot that the plant goes in. It has no holes in it whatsoever. This pot fits inside another, larger pot that contains water and slowly waters the plant through the porosity of the first clay pot. Has anyone tried using one of these for their orchids?

What do you do to keep your plants from drying out when you leave somewhere. Besides, of course, having someone else take care of them.

How long are you going to be gone for? Last year I was leaving for 2 weeks during the hottest part of summer (probably about 105 degrees on an average day- probably 90+ degrees in the house). I have most of my plants on humidity trays. I watered my plants and then put the trays in very large clear plastic garbage bags. Several of my orchids were happier AFTER my trip than they were before I left!

I was going to go to Alaska this summer for 2 weeks and have my mom take care of my plants for me, but I thought it would be good to give her a hand and keep the plants moist for a bit longer than usual. A lot of them need to be watered every day and it takes me a good 20 min to water everything. I don't think I will make it to AK this summer though because I don't have a lot of time left before school starts again. I think I will take a botany class this year..
Anyway, I just thought it would be nice to bring the subject up in case anyone else is having the same issues.
