Repotting a Cymbidium

When I'm repotting one, what do I look for in the roots? Do old roots have to be cut out like a phal. or not? All of mine but 1 bloomed in the winter, but I have one that is in spike now for some reason. It did not bloom last winter. But I have one that looks like it needs a new pot...also is there anything I need to add to the mix when repotting...like what kind of mix do they prefer?

Most Cyms. bloom in late fall through spring but I have some that will bloom in summer. I guess the temperature can vary the blooming times a little.
As for the roots, cut off all soft and dark roots. Those are dead. You can even cut a little of the good roots off if it's needed to fit in the pot. Sometimes the roots are way to much and long to fit in a proper sized pot.
I use shredded redwood bark (used for mulch) from home depot. It last a long time and hold plenty of moisture and the roots seem to like it more. Also very cheap. I also use regular plain fir bark. Both work fine and I'll add a sprinkle of a time release fertilizer like Oscomote (spelling???).

Thanks Solay, I like the idea of the shredded redwood bark. I'll be sure to post pics of the one when it blooms, the last time it bloomed was winter 2007, so it's a few months late this time.
