Hi. sorry about the rest of the world. It was one of the big very keen hobby/profesional Queensland growers who I believe had 10,000 plants. showed how to pollinate and cross phallies etc. Growing conditions etc. showed results of growth using several types of mix. Now I am hooked in trying Phallies growing properly. Cheerio Ron |

Hi . I live in the southern part of Australia and we need heat in winter to grow these types of Orchids "Phallies". We have not had any professional Phallie nursery growers do "Talks" at any of the local clubs. Main potting mix in our area seems to spagnum moss, either live or re-constuted moss. so far I have lost all Phallies grown in spag each winter. Perlite and peat moss was also popular amounst the local hobbist until winter kicks in. The grower had 4 types with plants in them on trial. straight bark mix gets too dry and roots seem to grow out of the mix. His best seem to be treated Coconut nuggets straight, grown in clear pots. Roots were all inside and the lot looked very well grown. This is the method I will try in the coming year. Just straight 15 to 20 mm coco nuggets in clear pots. Maybe in warmer climates they may be grown in more compact mixes but they do not work in our colder climate Cheerio Ron. |
