Something's happening to my Cycnoches.

I was swatting some gnats and found these on my Cycnoches Jean E. Monnier today. I guess those are spikes? Thought the leaves would fall off first and it not fall yet.

Who cares. I'm just happy something is happening. Yay!!!

Oh, WOW!!! I thought the same thing...Everything I've read said they bloom in the fall, just before it loses it's leaves. I'll have to go look at mine, now.

That's really exciting, Solay!!

I just ran and checked mine- Nuttin'

Patti, it happened so fast. One day nothing and then there it was all of a sudden. I noticed a little swelling or thickening of the bulb. Thought it was just growing. Must be the spikes coming in. Yours will probably do the same real soon. Keep an eye on it. I kept checking the side of the bulb. Thought the spikes came from there not between the leaves.

Thanks Kortney. I have a hard time taking pictures. Don't know all the stupid setting on the camera and too lazy to read the instructions.

I think they look like spikes to me. Cycnoces are one of the types that cna bloom while they still have their leaves.

This is a good example of hybrids vs species. You can get a lot of variation on flowering in hybrids, that you may not see in species.

I find about 5% of mine flower with the leaves still on. Many are now blooming 2-3 times a season.

Congrats, Cindy!

I have two Cyc. barthiorums. One is getting ready to bloom..buds just getting bigger. The other is still growing...getting taller. I, too, thought it was early for it to start spiking. Enjoy!

Oh...don't forget to take a pic and post it here on the forum. I'll do the same when mine blooms.

Solay, could you send an email or something to my plants?? That's amazing! I heard Cynoches were among the touchiest of touchy-hard-to-grow orchids and you make it look so easy!! Great job. Once again, I'm impressed! I should just get used to it, huh!?!

Orchidementia, I think it's just the time for spikes. Not my doing really. I'm sure many of us with Cynoches will start getting them now. I didn't know they were hard to grow. They seen pretty happy just sitting there. No special treatment.

Arlene you need to post a pic. of the buds since I don't know what that looks like yet.

Jerry and Kevin, hope that's the kind I have. Blooms with leaves and blooms several times a year. Sounds great.

They are doing good. Thanks for asking. The one with spots on the leaves with two spikes seems to be OK. I gave it a couple of sprays of insecticidal oil just in case it was scale damage. The single spike cycnoches has not spots yet and is growing well too. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that nothing goes wrong.

Here are the updated pics as of today. Not sure when the leaves will drop or how long before I actually see blooms.

Cindy,

Those are definitely spikes. Within the next 2-3 weeks, they should start blooming.

Which Cyc is blooming?

Btw...I see a bit of mite damage on the leaves. I hope the insecticidal spray would rid of them.

Arlene, I have only two Cycnoches and they both have spikes. I have Cyc. Jean E. Monnier (one spike) & Cyc. William Clarke (two spikes).

Mites? I was wondering what the spots were. Also been getting ants just on the one with the spots. I'll spray again over the weekend to be sure I killed them all. Thanks.

Kortney, I'm just hoping it opens. I dropped Mr. Clarke several times since it's so top heavy. I finally got it in another pot and put a stake in it.
I forgot what the blooms look like too. I know I saw a picture of it before. I think it was brown or yellowish? Oh, I guess we'll find out soon enough!

How tall is that growth? Or maybe a better question would be would a seedling bloom this year? It has six leaves on it. I don't know if that is a good way to measure it or not though, lol!

I don't know either. Mine came with 3 other bulbs. The smallest bulb is starting to turn yellowish. I think that's normal.
I think they will bloom from just one bulb though. I think Jay may know more.

Kortney, I saw the one you have on the other thread and I think it could spike this year. Mine is just a little bigger and thicker. I'll take a full picture tomorrow so you can compare.
