Mokara repot

I have had a yellow Mokara NOID for a year and it has filled the pot it was in. I decided to put it in a Vanda basket and hang it outside for the summer, maybe it will bloom!

Here are some pics of the repot:

I lined the basket with some moss and put it right out of the pot to the basket bark and all. Hopefully it will enjoy the sun and spike!

summer is hot and wet. I suggest you remove the moss. rotting will take place. Put it back
when it is fall.

Hi April, the plant appears to be very healthy, Have you noticed any changes since you repotted it in the basket? I am contemplating changing one of my plants to a basket, hence the question.

Bill

nothing yet Bill. I will keep updated, I am worried that it won't get enough humidity in the basket without any media, which is why I put the moss to try and help with moisture. I will check it tonight, if it is still wet I will remove some of the moss.

Looks great. The plant is big and healthy. I bet it'll bloom now with the extra light. I just moved all my Vanda seedling outside too today.

April -- That looks good and healthy.

Mr. Yoda (digitalgate) -- Using sphag moss on Vandas in basket is fine in a hot and rather dry environment. I use it, too. However, I didn't put enough in mine. The moss dries up within an hour, or less. Roots on my vandas and Mokara don't look as healthy as my friends' who grow theirs with more moss in the basket.

That said, I need to stop procastinating about adding more sphag moss in my vanda basket so I don't have to water/mist several times a day.

weather is quite different even in the same state(sometime city). If your moss is
bone dry after 1 hours then more moss will help. For me moss is the kiss
of death. Everybody has different environment, it is for individual to find out
the differences. Great one!

April -- I'm embarrassed to show off some of my Vandas and Mokara. The roots aren't looking well since i haven't added any more moss (been lazy or too busy).

digitalgate -- Yes. There are differences in weather. That's why I wanted to point that out. if I recall correctly, April lives in an area that has rather low humidity during warm/hot summer months. Therefore, sphag moss will help grow her Vanda.

I have got a bunch of mokaras in agar.It consists of 6 types including 2 minis.I just dont know what to do with it.I have been asked to attach it to coconet shell by the seller. What other things should I take care of.Can I use Azola instead of moss.?and how often should I water the tiny ones. When could I move it to more sun(not full sun).?
Any advices will be of great use.Thank you.

You need a lot of experience to raise seedling. It is a lot of work.fungicides twice a week is a minimum for me. might be different for you.

you can tie, the seedling to coconut . Use the husk part as it can partially retain water but not too well. If the water droplet did not dry up in 1 hour then it is too humid. If it
dry up in 15min then you need to water 3 time a day. You have to put the seeding about 1 feet away from the window (out of direct sun) for ONE year. Vanda took
four years to flower for me.
