P. Magic Kiss Blooms

The inflorescence was broken on this plant when I bought it a while back. It grew some more buds and the first one just opened a few days ago. I just love the colors on the flower.

That is magical. It is not too often that a Phal make me do a double take, but this one did. Thanks for sharing.

That is a very nice little peloric phal you have there. Thanks for sharing. This one goes on the wish list.

Does anyone have an estimate for the % of a cross showing peloria to in fact be peloric? Or another way, probably not ALL P. Magic Kiss are peloric, what are the chances that any one P. Magic Kiss would be peloric?

I'm not sure. But something I think is interesting that I saw at our local Meijer grocery store is that they had three peloric phals at the same time. Two of them were Brother Sarah Gold and the other was Baldan's Dream. So I'm wondering if those two were from the same pod and that had produced multiple pelorics. The place they get them from usually sends two or three pelorics a month to them. They did have one that had two almost completely developed lips on it one day but just my luck I had no money.

Darn, I wanna shop there, I love (LOVE) peloric Phals. Some look funny, but most of them are really cool. My peloric equestris is in spike right now, can't wait.

In the other thread involving this Phal, we learned that the name of this orchid is unknown. The "Magic Kiss' part is apparently a cultivar name but the grex (hybrid name) has been (stupidly) dropped by a breeder or seller somewhere along the line.

Does anyone with OrchidWiz or Wildcat find any records for Phals with the cultivar name of 'Magic Kiss'?

Agreed. I've also got the curiosity bug and I've been on the hunt. Needless to say, I found another site selling a Phal Magic Kiss, but it looks nothing like Kortney's. Easy Orchids

I think as of this point my beautiful NOID. I will just refer to it by nickname as Magic Kiss like I would name a frog Chauncy, lol.

Jenny that same site was the only one I could find too! My other one I got at Lowes at the same time is named just like this one so it's a NOID with a nickname too. It has beautiful flowers but I don't think it will recover from the crown rot that was presenr when I bought it. I got the rot dried up but no new anythings except for roots and the two more flowers.

Peloric happens when there is some kind of genetic mutation in the flowers. If you look close on the two petals with the yelow in the middle there are actually raised tags there. This is a genetic "defect" if you will. I think it is very beautiful though. Some pelorics can form more than one lip even. Here are some links for you: Peloric Orchids

Sabien~ I'm sorry but your Phal is not Peloric.

Peloric is where the lip of the flower mimics the petals.

Jenny, you make me smile. I remember about a year ago when you first joined. Youve really learned a lot since then! The student is becoming the teacher! Well done!

Just a note (and perhaps I'm splitting hairs here) on a fine technical point regarding pelorics: technically in most peloric flowers, it is the petals that display characteristics of thelip rather then the other way around. There are a few peloric Dendrobium in which the lip takes on the form of the petals like this: http://www.tropicalexotica.com/image...da-Classic.gif

This might sound silly but I though a peloric just meant that it had some sort of genetic mutation on the flowers in general. Is that right? On sabien's picture there are very tiny and small tags on the petals. Is mine peloric because of the tags or the petal coloring or both. Please don't laugh, lol!

No kid_a, it's not. A peloric orchid flower is when the petals take on the characteristics of the lip of the flower. Peloric is not just any kind of deformity. In fact in the AOS system of judging orchids, peloricism is not considered a deformity at all. I'd agree with them that a peloric flower is not a deformed flower.

Jenny,
Txs for the clarification.
This orchid may not be peloric, but it does have a deformity in one flower. All the flowers are perfectly shaped, except for this one. I think it was trying to become peloric, but got stuck halfway.

Nah, the poor thing just got stuck.

See, the petals don't match the lip. The lip is yellow and the petals are not. The petals have no resemblence to the lip at all.

Well I don't know how well this work out...I self pollinated it last night. So we'll see what happens. I used the pollen from the next flower over for each of them. I don't know if anything will even happen though. The last time I tried to do a cross nothing happened turns out I put it in the wrong place, lol. This time I put it in the right place though!

Oh man it is taking forever to load that page. I might have to wait till I'm at work to check it ( dial up sucks!) Well I might as well let you all know of the horrible horrible loss of my poor little pod I think it was spider mites. I was out of town for three days, when I came home there was some webby stuff all over it and it had started to shrivel. It could have been a combination of whatever the stuff that caused the webby stuff was and the heat (this happened about a month or so ago). I went ahead and pulled it off since it was shriveled and had an obvious insect presence. I soaked it and bathed it and washed and sprayed it a few times since I pulled it off. I am not completely sure it was spider mites, bit whatever it was is gone now. The roots are growing like wild still!

Gasp!!!!!!! By george! I think you may be onto something here Brookn! I will most definitely contact them and see what I can find out!!! Yay! How in the world did you find that???!!!!

That was a heck of spotting! I am hopeful that this is it. I am thinking it may hard to say for sure but maybe they will tell me they bought them in mass quantity from a certain farm mine came from that would be cool! How much of a chance do you think there is of nailing it and matching with certainty? Maybe they can give me more info about the naming!!!

I am betting that they know what it's parents are, and maybe some more.

That would be too cool. Hopefully they might be able to give you the insight that you need on it.

Does anyone with OrchidWiz or Wildcat find any records for Phals with the cultivar name of 'Magic Kiss'?
I find no registered grex by this name using OrchidWiz, confirming your initial finding with your sources. Also, I find no AOS awarded cultivar of any Phal grex by this name in AQPlus. I guess it's possible this cultivar could be awarded outside the US, but I wouldn't put any money on it.

It's most likely a retail trade name applied by an out of work Wall Street investment banker who can't pay his Hamptons vacation home mortgage which many of us now proudly own as US taxpayers.

i guess i should update this thread lol with what i found out. The lady called me back and said it was from a holland grower and it is not registered but that she had several that were not peloric. I dunno if it is exactly the same or not but the pics look really close so i think it could be possible they came from the same place in holland or something ?

Maybe yours is the "real deal" from Holland, just a mutation causing the peloricism.

Kortney yours is much, much prettier!

We are starting to see a lot of these kinda, maybe, sort of peloric phals. Good!
