Talking More Neo's

I got my Shutennou and Gojofukurin today. They were in tiny clay pots and very dry, I was worried at first. When I got them out of the pots the roots looked great and the plants look great.

There are 3 growths on the Shutennou and 2 on the Gojofukurin. I am very pleased with both. I repotted into the clay Neo pots I am getting better at the mounding.

Hi April, the mounds you made look good enough to eat! The plants appear to be healthy and I'm sure you will post pics of the blooms when they arrive. I have never made mounds--- I wonder if I could--- maybe one day....

Hi April,

I'm really unfamilar with neo's. Do they have a fragrance? Frequent bloomer?
Form of lady slipper?

They look really nice.

Nancy, go to the Neofinetia falcata thread and you will get all the information you need. Yes, the flowers smell like vanilla. I think they only bloom once a year.

In the Vanda family. They are awesome small orchids, that have many varieties. I am sure you would like them.

Thanks, Bill!

Nancy, Neofinetias are in the Vanda family. They are miniature plants that are praised in Japanese culture. They are very easy to grow and will tolerate temperatures from 30's to 90's. Flowers resemble some of the Angraecum varieties, small flowers with a long spur that are usually white but can be other pastel colors. They have been hybridized with other Vanda types to produce an array of colors that are also very floriferous. If you like Vandas but don't have the necessary room, you should try some. They will also flower in much lower light than is necessary for flowering Vandas.

Leisurely's Avatar is a Neo! I have one like that, a mini and one that's lavender.
They are so sweet! They really are a treasure to grow.

April they're gorgeous! I love 'em and can't wait until I'm able to get some more

NancyG~ If you don't have one in your collection, then you absolutely have to get one! You'll love it!

April,

Again...wonderful job on the sphag mounds! Great additions to the family.

As soon as I get my sphag moss in the mail, I'll be repotting my Shutennou, Ogonmaru, Benisuzume, and Yodonomatsu in the traditionally way. It will be my first time doing sphag mounds. I hope I do it as well as you.

Here is a website that I was able to see some pictures of how to pot in the traditional mound. I did also find out that after you make the mound, take the moss and lay it across your hand and wrap it around the roots, then put it on top of the mound.
New World Orchids also has pictures of how to do it too.

Potting Methods of Traditional Pot Plants

I am sure yours will look great. Be sure to post pictures after.

April they look great. I love the way you have all together neatly lined up. I only have 2 so I can't do that yet. I was thinking to get a Den. too one of these days. They are so small too. Very cute.

Very nice collection. All this Neo buying is making me jealous. I can't wait until fall to order some new Neo's.

I can't wait to see them bloom.

I think it depends on the day. I would say over all it takes 4-5 days for the mounds to dry out. If it is a dark gloomy day then maybe a little longer. I try to have good air circulation which also lets them dry out a bit faster.

You're lucky! I have to drench mine every 2 days...combination of heat and air circulation

I think it is because I am in Washington, we don't get those really hot days like you do in California.

Sometimes I wish we would, I get tired of the gray and the rain.

Well April, we are looking for some relief over the next few days. If you want to really experience some hot days you should come to Palm Springs in another month. We usually get temps around 125-130F during July and August.

But it is worth having 60F days in January.

You would have liked it here today, 59-60 today. Yesterday 85! It is really weird this year, one nice day and then several days of cloudy, cool and rain!!

We hope after the 4th of July will start to have some summer.
