Other Method not Sphag n BAg

Hi everyone!! I have been very unsuccessful with sphag n bag. All my plants died or didn't make any roots. Do you have any other method I could use for rootless orchids?

Thanks!

I too have never had any success with bag-n-spag. I haven't mentioned this before but I am currently experimenting with a wet paper towel technique on one of my paphs that turned up rootless. We'll see how that goes.

What type of orchid?

A bowl with moist sphag in the bottom with the plant resting on the sphag, is another method. The sides of the bowl will help keep the humidity up around the plant but you get air exchange so you don't create a fungus problem. Rooting hormones applied appropriately might also speed up the process.

I use a different method for the catt family.

I, too, am in the process of using the moss in a baggie method for a blue violacea seedling that I got from Orchidview a few months ago. It's been in the bag almost three weeks with no activity at all. I've been soaking in a rooting solution with sugar once a week. I'll be interested to see the responses from this thread in case the bag method just doesn't work.

I have used & still use this method ...It's a question of trial & error...
When I first tried I ended up rotting & killing the plants. I have now found the 'right' place in my house in a warm room(washer & dryer room!) has a window but gets no direct light at all... You need alot of patience !the Bags are at the same height of the window and 2 meters / 6 foot away from it. The sphag must not be very wet + don't let the plant touch..it

I have an phal equestris which had no roots left ..I soaked it in KLN and put in an empty pot (to hold it upright) and put the pot into a bag with some damp sphag...this was in January...since then it has grown 2 keikis on the flower stalk, the best is the plant has put out new leaves (which I couldn't believe) and 3 weeks ago finally started growing a root, which is now about 1 cm long... I'll just wait for more roots..... by end of year..? I HOPE !!

in my weather? hang dry without any media. spray twice a day , placed in 500foot candle
of light. Have raised plenty of Phalaenopsis this way. Of course , this will not work anywhere outside of equator.

I've had more failures than successes with the sphag & bag method. nanella is right that you need a lot of patience.

I've got three den canes just sitting out. Two seem to be growing at the buds.
They are out of the sun, and the humidity has been about 50-80%. It's only been about 2 weeks like this.

i dont think you should cut off the roots. I normally do what you do. with the
roots. It is a numbers game. Most of the time they do not grow new keiki. But when they do, I save lot of money.

Nanella, when you put the pot in a plastic bag, did you keep the plastic bag open at the top or was it closed completely? How much KLN did you put in the water for soaking?

Thanks!

I cut them off when i found rot in the canes at the very base between the roots and the canes. If I hadn't cut the rot off, it would have expanded up the canes so the roots were no use anyway. I think the one on the left is too skinny to support any keiki, but the other two are definitely growing something.

Plus some books show it as a means of propagating Dens.

Hi, I close the bag fully. I used to look at it every day it's been 6 months so now I only look about once a week.... I believe it's good to look frequently at first so that you can 'smell' if it's too damp...if it is leave the bag open for a night (I usually only have time in the evening) and then close again...
The equestris I mentioned hasn't been opened for about 2 weeks now.
As far as dose of KLN I am NOT an expert but I soaked it 1 tbs to a gallon (4ml per litre)...and I have done that a couple of times during the past 6 months..makes me think maybe I should do it again?
hope this helps & good luck

Another method I saw in a boom for dends was instead of sphag n bag use wet sand in a tray with a lid and put in some vent holes. I have not tried it before though.
