Is this a Brassia?

I just bought this today. I think I might have caught orchidmania from you people. It did not have a tag on it. Anyone know what it is? Brassia? The lady at the Home Depot said it was Miltonia, but I am 98% sure that's not true. I'm completely new at this, but it doesn't look anything like any pics I've seen on here of Miltonia.

And if it is Brassia, does anyone have any growing tips? Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see a thread on Brassia care. Thanks, guys!

I agree. It's quite nice. Hopefully, I won't kill it.

I think it's a Aspasia or a Brassia. I've seen pics. of both and they look similar to what you got. I'm no expert so I'm sure someone who knows for sure will come along. Whatever it is, it's beautiful and I don't think it's a Milt. either.

I think it looks like Miltassia Shelob.

Keep in mind that this does not mean that it is a definite match. It could be that they have similar parentage. No way to tell for sure.

Jay's on the right track. I'm pretty sure it is a Miltassia (a cross between a Miltonia and a Brassia) but I don't think it is Shelob.

I agree with Jay on the ID, especially since the suppliers to Home Depot are friends and they had a lot of them this year, and since most Oncidium Intergenerics are finished for the season and this one is still blooming.

I have Miltassis Shelob 'Tolkein' Am/Aos. I am not a gambler but I would be willing to bet that your plant is the same. The flower is identical. My plant is spiking now and usually blooms during the summer.

Thanks! Yes, it does look extremely similar. I will go ahead and assume that it's just a NOID but it's kinda fun to be able to attach a name to it.

How does one grow a Miltassia? I can take a guess that they like lots of light and not to dry out, based on what I read about Brassia, but any other tips you all have, would be much appreciated.

I have a Miltassia Charles M. Fitch that I've had for about 4 years. It grows like a weed.
Almost tripled in size. I have mine in a eastern exposure. It likes medium light. Water
when almost dry.

I have to agree with Jay and Jerry. Mtssa. Shelob. As for the cultivar, that we would not be able to help you on. It could be 'Tolkien' or it could be 'Red Spider'. In order to find out for sure, I'd go back to HD and find out where they got the plants (The vendor they bought them from) You can track plants that way. Another kind of detective work is to look at the other orchids that are on the shelves and look for their tags and the company on those tags. I've been able to track several orchid names doing this

I would concur with the ID of your plant as a Mtssa. Shelob. Down in San Diego you could easily grow these indoors and outdoors. I grow mine in good indirect light and water once a week. I also fertilize with a 20-20-20 fertilizer year round except when in bloom but who knows that might not be the optimal. This year mine has bloomed a second time, so you might find a nice bloom come Christmas!

It's simply not possible to make a positive ID using only a hand full of internet pictures. Doing a bit of detective work and contacting growers and breeders is another story and can usually produce some reliable results but in this case to positively say this is Miltassia Shelob is simply not possible.
