separated phals....new leaf?

A few months ago, I separated two phals which were in the same pot. The roots were severly damaged on one of the plants and the ones one the other were more in tact. I trimmed off all the damaged roots on both of them and replanted them both in a mix of sphagnum and fir bark. I havent watered them too much since.

The phal that had the most root damage seems to be doing better now than the one that had less. It even has a small new leaf emerging from the center. Is this a good thing? Is it a sign that roots are growing and is on its way to recovery?

If its growing a new leaf, I'd say its fine. I'd start watering normally especially with the new growth. I've repotted phals that have only had literally 2 good roots on them. They grew back very fast and started growing new leaves shortly after.

Keep an eye out near the base of the plant. If it is growing a new leaf then it will probably be throwing new roots soon too. Keep doing what you are doing.

The other plant with fewer roots should do well too. I separated two in one pot and gave the stronger plant away. I potted the weaker one that had never bloomed in bark and have been watering it normally. It is now in the process of growing roots and a new leaf. Sometimes it just takes time and patience. They'll both do well.
